  1. Meet with a qualified physician for an evaluation
  2. Get evaluated and register with Louisiana's Board of Pharmacy's Medical Cannabis Registry

How to Get Your Louisiana Medical Marijuana Card

Louisiana is a unique state in terms of its medical marijuana laws and regulations. In fact, you don’t even receive an MMJ card: you’re just added to a registry. But, we’ll talk about that later.

Who Can Get a Louisiana Medical Marijuana Card?

As we mentioned above, Louisiana doesn’t actually offer physical MMJ cards. Instead, once you meet with a qualified doctor, your name is added to a state registry.

In order for your name to get added to this registry, you must be a resident of Louisiana and have a clear, debilitating health condition that is verified by a Board-approved physician. Those who are under the age of 18 can be added to the registry but only with parental (or guardian) approval.

What Are The Qualifying Conditions for Medical Cannabis in Louisiana?

Like most states, Louisiana had previously listed qualifying conditions for approved medical cannabis use. However, back in 2020, Louisiana mended its cannabis laws, eliminating restrictions for certain medical conditions.

To be added to the registry, then, you must have a well-established relationship with your Board-approved physician, and they will determine whether or not your medical conditions can be alleviated through medical marijuana consumption.

How-To Steps for Getting an MMJ Card in Louisiana

1. Meet With a Board-Certified Physician

The first step to getting your name added to Louisiana’s Board of Pharmacy’s Medical Cannabis Registry is to meet with a Board-certified physician. These are physicians that have met with and been approved by the state of Louisiana to recommend medical cannabis to certain patients.

However, it’s crucial to note that you must have a bonafide or well-established relationship with this doctor: it cannot be your first visit. Rather, there must be a previous doctor-patient relationship that the state can deem legitimate.

After you’ve found your approved physician, it’s time to get evaluated. Again, Louisiana got rid of their list of qualifying medical conditions, so it is up to your doctor to decide whether or not your conditions could be alleviated/helped through medical cannabis. Once they’ve made this decision, your physician will then add your name to the Medical Cannabis Registry

From there, the doctor will recommend you to one of nine cannabis pharmacies in the state (though you’re free to visit whichever one you please).

3. Visit a Licensed Pharmacy and Start Shopping!

As soon as your name is added to the registry, you’re ready to visit a licensed pharmacy and start shopping for your medical cannabis products.
