Yes! In November 2020, South Dakota voted to legalize both medical and recreational cannabis in the state. 51% of voters voted in favor of recreational cannabis, while an overwhelming 69% voted to legalize medical cannabis. Soon, medical patients will be able to purchase up to three ounces of medical cannabis-—thrice the amount that recreational consumers have access to. No doubt patients are relieved and ready to apply for their South Dakota Medical Marijuana Card.

Of course, we all know that measures like these take quite some time to enact. In fact, the legislation itself doesn’t even officially take effect until July 1, 2021. South Dakota’s medical marijuana program is expected to unveil towards mid to late 2021, with patients hoping to obtain their cards by November.

How to Qualify for Medical Marijuana in South Dakota

The actual regulations surrounding the medical marijuana program in South Dakota have yet to be released. However, we can assume that, to qualify for an MMJ card, you will have to be diagnosed with one of the state’s qualifying conditions, as well as be an in-state resident.

The actual list of qualifying medical conditions has not yet been released to the public, but when it does, we'll be sure to update you. We'll outline the steps to our South Dakota MMJ Card.

How Do I Get a South Dakota Medical Marijuana Card?

Once again, the nitty-gritty details behind this program are still up in the air, but we have a good idea as to what you can expect when obtaining your medical cannabis card in South Dakota.

Like most states, South Dakota will likely require you to meet with a licensed physician who can diagnose you with at least one of the state’s qualifying conditions. Along with a practitioner’s recommendation, we can assume that the Mount Rushmore State also requires proof of in-state residency and identification. We aren’t sure if there is an application fee, or what it will be at this time.

Where Do I Go for Medical Cannabis in S.D.?

Once the program is up and running, medical patients should have access to licensed dispensaries or medical marijuana shops across the state. The process of actually distributing licenses, cultivating cannabis, and opening dispensaries is a long and complicated one. Also, there’s a good chance these shops won’t be open until the end of the year, if that. So, do your best to be patient! Eventually, South Dakota dispensary doors will open to cardholders like you.

Does My State Have Medical Marijuana Doctors?

Simply put, we don’t know yet! Right now, everything is still quite up in the air in terms of South Dakota’s medical marijuana issues. Additionally, how they’ll introduce and operate it is still TBD. With the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, SD may permit telehealth visits. This, of course would be after the unveiling of the program. Telemedicine allows you to do your evaluation right from the comfort of your own home.

Until then, though, all we have to do is wait. But, don’t worry: Elevate Holistics will be sure to keep you updated on all things surrounding South Dakota’s new medical cannabis program.
