Medical Marijuana NYC

Medical marijuana has been legal in New York City since 2014. In March 2021, the state of New York also legalized recreational marijuana. Medical marijuana can help patients with a wide variety of chronic health conditions manage their symptoms and feel more comfortable. Here’s what you need to know about legal marijuana in NYC.

Is Medical Marijuana Legal In NYC?

Medical marijuana has been legal in New York City since 2014. Around this time, mayor Bill De Blasio also directed the city police to stop marijuana arrests and issue tickets for possession of small amounts of marijuana. The first medical dispensaries began to open in New York City in 2016.

In 2021, the state of New York also legalized marijuana for recreational use. This means that anyone over the age of 21 can now possess up to 3 ounces of cannabis at home. Recreational dispensaries are expected to begin opening later in 2022.

However, if you struggle with a chronic medical condition that responds well to marijuana, there are benefits to keeping your medical card. A medical marijuana card allows you to purchase larger quantities of marijuana than a recreational user, and it also gives you access to lower tax rates. In the event of a supply shortage, you’ll also receive purchasing priority. Finally, medical cards are available for eligible patients over the age of 18 in NYC, whereas you must be over the age of 21 to use recreational marijuana in New York City.

Does NYC Allow Recreational Marijuana?

The state of New York officially legalized recreational marijuana on March 30th, 2021. This means that residents of New York City and the entire state who are over the age of 21 can now possess up to 3 ounces of NYC legal marijuana for personal use. You can smoke marijuana in any area where smoking tobacco is also legal.

Recreational dispensaries are not up and running yet in New York City. This means that if you don’t have a medical marijuana card, you won’t be able to purchase weed in NYC. These recreational dispensaries are expected to start opening later in 2022. Some medical marijuana NYC dispensary brands may also start selling recreational products. Once this happens, New York residents will be able to store up to 5 ounces of marijuana in their homes. Additionally, each adult will be able to grow up to 3 plants at home once NYC marijuana legalization fully goes into effect.

How To Apply For A Medical Card in NYC

Since medical marijuana has been legal in New York for many years, the process of getting a medical marijuana card is actually fairly easy. The first step is to visit a medical marijuana NYC doctor to get your certification.

The doctor will need to confirm that you have one of New York state’s qualifying conditions for medical marijuana. Right now, there are a wide range of chronic conditions and health complications that qualify for medical marijuana care. Once your doctor has confirmed that you qualify for a medical marijuana card, they will submit the patient certification form to the state of New York.

Keep in mind that not every doctor is registered with the medical marijuana program. You’ll want to check and make sure your practitioner is registered before making an appointment. Elevate Holistics offers online appointments with doctors registered in NYC to make the process even more seamless.

Once your doctor has submitted your certification, you will be able to go online and finish your application. You can do so by creating an account online at At this point, you will need to provide proof of New York residency. You’ll also need to pay the $50 registration fee, although it is waived for some patients.

After your application has been processed and approved, you will be able to download a temporary card and start visiting the NYC medical marijuana dispensary right away. Your permanent card will be mailed to you in a few weeks as well.

Cost Of A Medical Marijuana Card In NYC

When you apply for your medical marijuana card, you will need to pay the $50 registration fee. You will also need to pay for the cost of an appointment with a NYC medical marijuana doctor. Because marijuana is not yet legal on the federal level, health insurance companies don’t cover the cost of these appointments.

The cost of a visit with a medical marijuana doctor can vary depending on the provider you choose. Elevate Holistics offers affordable tele-health appointments with doctors who give medical marijuana cards in NYC starting at $75.

Qualifying Conditions For MMJ In NYC

There are a wide range of conditions that qualify for a medical marijuana card in New York City. These include cancer, HIV/AIDS, MS, ALS, PTSD, Parkinson’s Disease, epilepsy, neuropathy, inflammatory bowel disease, Huntington’s disease, and spinal cord injury.

NYC weed can also be prescribed for other conditions that cause certain symptoms. Any condition that causes severe or chronic pain, nausea, muscle spasms, seizures, or wasting syndrome will also qualify for a medical marijuana card. Additionally, any condition that qualifies for an opioid prescription can also qualify for a medical marijuana card in New York. This is an effort to reduce opioid use disorder.

How Much Is A Medical Marijuana Card In NYC?

The fee for a medical marijuana card in NYC is $50, although this fee is waived for many patients under the Compassionate Care Act. Additionally, you’ll need to pay the cost of the appointment with your medical marijuana doctor, which can vary widely depending on your provider. Because insurance companies do not yet cover marijuana related expenses, you will need to pay for this appointment out of pocket.

Do I Have To Renew My Medical Marijuana Card NYC?

Medical marijuana cards in New York City last for one year total. This means that you will need to renew your card yearly. Luckily, the process of renewing your medical marijuana card is very simple. You will need to visit a NYC medical marijuana doctor either in person or online, who will confirm that you are still eligible for a MMJ card. Then you will need to go online to your account and verify your renewal.

Marijuana Dispensaries In New York City

If you’re wondering where to get weed in NYC, you have plenty of options to choose from. There are dispensaries located all over the city – in fact, there’s a good chance there is one in your neighborhood. There are also plenty of dispensaries located in the nearby suburbs for those who need them. Most of these dispensaries are public transit accessible for your convenience.

When you visit a marijuana dispensary in NYC, the staff can help you figure out which products are best for you given your medical needs and your lifestyle. In addition to flower, dispensaries also sell vapes, oils, and edibles in NYC, so there are plenty of great products to choose from. Marijuana edibles in New York City can be a particularly good option if you don’t enjoy smoking. You will need to bring your medical marijuana card as well as your New York state ID. Many dispensaries recommend that new patients call first for a more seamless experience.

Growing Marijuana In NYC

Medical marijuana patients in New York are currently allowed to grow their own plants. When recreational dispensaries open in NYC, any adult over the age of 21 will also be able to grow their own marijuana.

Patients with a medical card can currently grow up to 6 plants in their homes, but they must be stored securely and out of public view. You’ll also want to check your lease before growing medical marijuana plants, as landlords do have the power to restrict growth on their properties. Growing your own marijuana can be a cost-effective option if you are using large quantities for your medical condition.
