Booked an appointment at 2pm Thursday afternoon and Elevate Holistics sent me a text at 9pm Saturday night letting me know my application is ready for payment and to be sent to the state, wow. Overall a wonderful experience! Coming from a recreationally legal state to a medically legal state I honestly expected the worst (proof of prescription medications, years of health history, etc); Elevate Holistics made everything an incredibly smooth process with none of the above mentioned we're needed - just honest, chronic issues that benefit from cannabis products!

How to Get Your Medical Marijuana Card in Colorado

In general, medical patients in Colorado are going to have a few more perks than non-medical patients. Medical patients have access to larger possession amounts, larger at-home yields, and even special counters at dispensaries.

Who Can Get a Medical Card in Colorado?

To get a medical card in Colorado, you must be at least 18 years old, be an in-state resident, and have been diagnosed with at least one of the state’s qualifying medical conditions.

Minors in Colorado with qualifying conditions also have access to medical cannabis cards, they just have to meet with two different physicians and receive two different physician certifications—rather than just one—to qualify.

What Are the Qualifying Conditions for Medical Cannabis in Colorado?

The qualifying medical conditions for getting a medical marijuana card in Colorado are:

  • AIDS (Positive Status)
  • Cachexia
  • Cancer
  • Glaucoma
  • HIV (Positive Status)
  • Persistent muscle spasms
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Seizures
  • Severe nausea
  • Severe pain

How-To Steps for Getting Your Colorado Medical Marijuana Card

1: Find a Qualified Physician and Receive a Physician’s Certification

First thing’s first: if you want a Colorado medical marijuana card, you’ll need to find an approved physician to help you get one. These doctors will then evaluate you to see if you have at least one of the qualifying conditions listed in the state program. From there, they will fill out a physician’s certification for you, a document that’s integral in your MMJ application process.

2: Make an Account and Apply Online

Next, it’s time to make an online account and apply for your card online. You will do this through Colorado’s Department of Public Health & Environment website. Make sure you’re able to easily make a copy of your physician’s certification to send in alongside your application.

If you don’t have access to the Internet or a computer, don’t worry! The state offers mail-in options just for you. However, the process is going to take a few weeks longer than it would if you completed it online.

3: Pay Your Fees and Submit Your Application

Now, after you’ve crafted an online account (if you can), you must pay the $25 application process fee. Once this has been paid, your application will be submitted and all you have to do is wait.

4. Get Approved and Receive Your Colorado MMJ Card

In just a few days, your Colorado MMJ card application will be approved and you’ll receive a virtual copy of your MMJ card. If you completed the process through the mail, you can expect to receive your physical card in the mail about 6-8 weeks later. Now, it’s time to shop one of the hundreds of medical dispensaries in the state of Colorado.

Most frequently MMJ asked questions

  • Who qualifies for a medical marijuana card in Colorado?

To obtain a medical marijuana card in Colorado, you must be at least 18 years old, be an in-state resident, and be diagnosed with at least one of the qualifying medical conditions listed in the program. You must be diagnosed by a licensed physician and receive a physician certification to send in with your MMJ card application.

The qualifying medical conditions are listed below:

    • AIDS (Positive Status)
    • Cachexia
    • Cancer
    • Glaucoma
    • HIV (Positive Status)
    • Persistent Muscle Spasms
    • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
    • Seizures
    • Severe Nausea
    • Severe Pain

If you are not yet 18, you can still be granted a medical card in Colorado if you have one of the debilitating health conditions listed. However, the minor must see two different physicians and submit two physician certifications to be approved.

  • How much does the application process cost?

It will cost you $25 every time you apply for your medical card in Colorado.

  • Do you need to meet with a physician every year?

Yes. The physician statement you receive from your doctor is only valid for one year, so you must obtain a new one each time you renew your card.

  • How long does your card last?

If you were issued your card for a “debilitating” medical condition, your MMJ card is valid for exactly one year after registration.

If you were issued your card for a “disabling” medical condition, then your MMJ card is valid anywhere from 60 days to a year depending on a doctor’s recommendation.

  • Do you apply online or in-person?

Both! You can apply either online or in-person depending on what you have access to. If you’re not readily accessible to the Internet, you may be sent a paper application that you can fill out and mail in. However, do keep in mind that paper applications are going to take much longer to process; typically, these will take between 6-8 weeks before you hear a response.

  • How much medical cannabis can you possess at once in Colorado?

Medical patients can purchase up to two ounces of cannabis in Colorado at once. Non-medical patients have access to just one ounce.

  • Where can you consume cannabis?

In Colorado, like most states, you cannot consume cannabis of any kind in public spaces. This includes your vehicle, schools, outdoor malls, concert venues, bars, or open spaces like rooftops. However, there are a few cannabis-friendly businesses that do allow for cannabis consumption; these establishments must clearly state that they’re okay with private cannabis use.

  • Can you grow cannabis at home?

Medical marijuana patients can grow up to 12 plants at once, possibly more depending on what their physician allows. Non-medical patients can grow up to six plants in their home, with up to three being in their flowering stage. In both of these circumstances, the plants must be kept in an enclosed, locked area that isn’t easily accessible to those under the age of 21.
