Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is medical cannabis legal in Minnesota?

Yes, certain forms of medical cannabis are legal for qualifying patients in Minnesota.

  • Who qualifies for a Minnesota MMJ card?

Those who are at least 18 years old, are in-state residents, and who have at least one qualifying condition can obtain a Minnesota MMJ card. If you’re under the age of 18 and have a qualifying condition, you can have a caregiver apply for the program on your behalf.

  • What are the qualifying conditions?

The qualifying conditions for Minnesota’s medical marijuana program are:

    • Cancer associated with severe/chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting, or cachexia or severe wasting
    • Glaucoma
    • HIV/AIDS
    • Tourette Syndrome
    • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
    • Seizures, including those characteristics of epilepsy
    • Severe and persistent muscle spasms, including those characteristics of multiple sclerosis
    • Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease
    • Terminal illness, with a probable life expectancy of less than one year*
    • Intractable pain
    • Post-traumatic stress disorder
    • Autism
    • Obstructive sleep apnea
    • Alzheimer’s disease
    • Chronic pain
    • Sickle cell disease (effective Aug. 2021)
    • Chronic motor or vocal tic disorder (effective Aug. 2021)

  • What is the patient application process like?

To apply for your MMJ card in Minnesota, you must first check with your health provider to see if your practitioner is eligible to certify you or not. If they are, then you will meet with them for an evaluation and they may or may not diagnose you with one of the qualifying conditions.

If they do, you will then give your practitioner a private email address for proper cannabis-related communication. Once you’ve done this, you can fill out and bring in the Patient Email and Acknowledgement Form to your doctor. While you’re there, you are going to need to request a visitation summary that lists your previous visits, current medications, and qualifying conditions.

Soon after this, you will get an email from the Office of Medical Cannabis certifying you for your medicinal marijuana. The email will have a link for you to follow to fill out the actual application for a card online.

From there, you will register yourself online through the Office of Medical Cannabis, providing a government-issued ID and credit card number. When your account gets approved, you’ll receive an email. As soon as you get this confirmation email, you will need to fill out the patient self-evaluation report, which has to be done before every cannabis purchase. Finally, you’ll head to a Cannabis Patient Center (CPC) where a certified pharmacist will recommend a product and dosage.

  • How much does a Minnesota MMJ card cost?

The annual registration fee for a Minnesota MMJ card is $200, but you may qualify for a reduced fee if you receive one of the following:

    • Supplemental Security Income
    • Social Security Disability (including those transitioning to retirement benefits)
    • Medical assistance
    • MinnesotaCare
    • IHS
    • Railroad disability
    • VA dependency and indemnity compensation

Medical Cannabis Certification for Minnesota

Why Medical Marijuana Doctors are Necessary.

The vast majority of doctors don’t have a great understanding of cannabinoids due to a woefully archaic medical schooling system. In fact, most medical schools don’t even offer classes on the endocannabinoid system! This is the system in the body that interacts with THC, CBD, and other phytocannabinoids in cannabis. Crazy, right? While this is changing, the majority of doctors in America can’t truly point people in the right direction when it comes to cannabis as a medicine. This is where Elevate Holistics comes in by offering you a full staff of healthcare professionals that can take you from CBD to THC, to pharmaceutical interactions, and treatment plans. Make sure to ask your physician and Elevate staff anything on your mind so we can get you the resources you need to Elevate your health naturally.
