Like any new industry that is rapidly becoming part of the mainstream, you’re beginning to see medical marijuana being taken seriously both as a medical option and as a career. Just like we saw the growth of brewmasters’ training programs after the craft beer boom, now we’re beginning to see a number of educational opportunities for individuals looking to increase their cannabis knowledge about the practice and business of medical marijuana. Thankfully, cannabis education is on the rise.

Increase Your Cannabis Knowledge

Most states already require some type of certification course or licensing for medical professionals working in or around a dispensary or growing facility. However, for more than just compliance-level understanding, you might have to do a bit of digging to find what you’re after. There are a number of avenues, and while you may even have to do a bit of traveling, they represent what is sure to be a continuing focus on training and education in the medical marijuana industry.

The shape and focus of the programs often differ, but right now there are a number of ways to add to your knowledge of the industry and its benefits. A lot of the offerings exist in an online space, making it easy for almost anyone to get involved. Healer.com provides a full-bodied curriculum designed to educate students about the science of cannabis, dosage protcols, treatment methodologies, and CBD applications. The online format makes it very schedule-friendly, and a continuing education component helps students add to their knowledge base after the initial program is completed.

For a more varied approach to education, you have the Cleveland School of Cannabis (CSC), the only state-approved career school for cannabis education east of Colorado. Operating both online and in brick-and-mortar classrooms across Ohio, the CSC provides different tracks for students with different goals. They offer training directed at medical professionals looking to expand their practice and a certification program that provides state-approved education for growers, testers, and dispensary employees. For those who are interested in the bigger picture, CSC also has a 300-hour executive program that provides training for students looking to become industry leaders. This full-spectrum curriculum offers education in horticulture, chemistry, facility operation, finance and accounting, and everything you’d need to understand a soil-to-customer operation.

Getting a Medical Marijuana Education

For a more classical approach to education, the University of Maryland, Baltimore launched a Master of Science in Medical Cannabis Science and Therapeutics program, the first of its kind in the country. The program is designed for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree and are looking to increase their understanding of the medical cannabis industry, add to existing research, and develop a well-informed medical cannabis policy. The program initially opened with room for only 50 students, but after receiving over 500 applications, they expanded the program to 150. We expect that in the near future you won’t have to go as far as the east coast to find a university-accredited program that will get you the medical marijuana training that you’re looking for.
