How To Get a Medical Marijuana Card in Massachusetts

With Elevate Holistics’ help, getting a Massachusetts medical card has never been easier. Below, we’ve broken down everything you need to know about medical marijuana in Massachusetts, cannabis laws, and so much more. If you’re wondering how to get your own MMJ card in The Bay State, we’ve got you covered.

Does Massachusetts Have Medical Marijuana?

First thing’s first, yes, Massachusetts does have legal medical marijuana. MMJ has been legal in MA for a few years now, as voters approved the Massachusetts Medical Marijuana Ballot Initiative back in 2012.

The plant has been legal across the state for over a decade now, and the industry continues to thrive and expand.

Is Marijuana Legal for Recreational Use in Massachusetts?

Along with medical marijuana, recreational cannabis is also legal in Massachusetts. That’s right: MA legalized adult-use cannabis consumption in 2016. However, retail sales didn’t begin until November 2018, two years after the initial approval.

Over time, the state crafted bills differentiating the rules and regulations surrounding medical and recreational cannabis. We’ll talk more about specific marijuana laws next, but you should note that recreational consumers have to pay a significant 20% tax on Massachusetts recreational weed. On the flip side, medical patients can enjoy their products totally tax-free. (Just somethin’ to think about.)

Massachusetts Medical Marijuana Laws

Massachusetts medical marijuana laws differ from recreational laws, which tends to be the case throughout most states. For medical patients, you can purchase up to a 60-day supply of MMJ from any Massachusetts dispensary. This supply is generally limited to 10 ounces, but if your medical condition requires more, your healthcare provider can allow a larger allotment.

Massachusetts medical cannabis cardholders can even have their products delivered straight to their door. That’s right: cannabis delivery is available to those in MA with valid MMJ cards. This kind of service is ideal for those with accessibility complications or who don’t live close enough to a Massachusetts dispensary.

Do note that Massachusetts cannabis laws differ for recreational consumers. As we mentioned above, adult-use cannabis can come with about a 20% sales tax, while medical patients are exempt. Recreational consumers can also possess 10 ounces of cannabis at home, but less than one ounce in public. However, you can only purchase one ounce of cannabis or five grams of concentrate from Massachusetts dispensaries at once.

In The Bay State, public consumption is illegal. You can only smoke, eat, vape, or consume cannabis on private property with the owner’s consent if you don’t own the property. You’re allowed to carry your cannabis in your vehicle, but it must be sealed and kept in the trunk or locked glove compartment. This goes for both recreational and medical consumers.

What are the qualifying conditions for a medical card in MA?

The list of qualifying conditions for your Massachusetts medical card isn’t nearly as extensive as in other states. To get your MMJ card in MA, you must have one of the following conditions:

How Do I Get My Medical Marijuana Card in Massachusetts?

Getting your medical card in Massachusetts is actually quite straightforward. First, you must meet with a qualified physician who certifies that medical marijuana would be right for you. This is where you must have one of the above qualifying conditions.

After this, you will receive a personal identification number from the physician. You’ll use this to register with the state’s program. Here, you will provide a valid state-issued ID to certify your MA residency, as well as an appropriate photo of yourself.

Once you’ve submitted all this information, you’ll simply wait for the state’s program to approve you and send you your MMJ card. Then, you’ll be all set to purchase Massachusetts medical marijuana.

How Long is the Application Process?

Don’t worry: you won’t have to wait long to get your MA MMJ card. Once the state approves you, you will get an email that links you to a printable, temporary ID. You can use this while you wait for your permanent card to come in the mail, which typically takes about 2-3 weeks after approval.

How Much is a Medical Marijuana Card in Massachusetts?

A few years ago, the state fee for a Massachusetts medical card was $50. However, back in 2019, the state announced that it would no longer charge patients this fee, becoming one of the few MMJ programs in the US to do so. Thus, you only have to pay for your doctor’s appointment, which can cost anywhere from $100-$200 depending on where you go.

Can I Renew My Medical Marijuana Card Online?

Wondering how to renew your medical card? Luckily, Massachusetts MMJ online system is comprehensive and user-friendly, allowing you to renew your medical marijuana card right from the comfort of your home. By using the portal on the Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission website, you can follow step-by-step instructions, walking you through the renewal process online.

If you’d like, you also have the option of renewing your MA medical card by mail, too. However, the processing times tend to be a bit longer than when you complete it online. For more instructions on how to do this by mail, click here.

Are There Any Dispensaries Near Me?

While we don’t know your address, we can almost guarantee that there’s a Massachusetts dispensary near you. Since 2020, nearly 300 dispensary licenses have been approved by the state, with nearly 100,000 registered medical patients. With numbers like those, there’s bound to be a dispensary near you. To find a list of licensed dispensaries in Massachusetts, click here.

If there isn’t a Massachusetts dispensary in your area, don’t panic! Unlike most states, MA allows cannabis delivery for registered medical patients. With services like these, you simply place an order online and have your cannabis delivered to your door in a discreet, safe manner. As long as you have your valid MMJ card and proof of identification, you don’t even have to leave your home to get your medical cannabis anymore. Perks of being a medical patient, huh?

How to Become a Cannabis Caregiver in Massachusetts

Massachusetts medical marijuana caregiver laws state that prospective caregivers have to first register with the MMP using the patient’s physician-provided PIN. From there, the program will analyze your credentials and either approve or deny you.

To be a caregiver in Massachusetts, you must be at least 21 years old and cannot serve more than one patient at a time. You and your patient have to maintain an active registration with the MMP. Finally, it’s vital to carry your Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana registration card with you at all times when possessing or buying cannabis for your patient.

Can Massachusetts Medical Marijuana Patients Grow Cannabis?

Yes! Growing marijuana in Massachusetts is legal for anyone 21 years old and older. You are permitted to cultivate up to six plants per adult or 12 plants per household. Growing cannabis at home doesn’t count towards your 10-ounce allotment, either.

Medical patients are allowed to cultivate their own cannabis, too. Those with MMJ cards can lawfully grow the number of plants they need to have a 60-day supply of cannabis. You just have to state your intention to do so during the registration process.

Most frequently MMJ asked questions

  • Is marijuana legal in Massachusetts?

Massachusetts marijuana legalization began in 2008, when the state opted to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. In 2012, the state legalized medical marijuana for patients with certain chronic health conditions. As a result, dispensaries started opening in 2013. Towns in Massachusetts are not allowed to completely ban medical dispensaries, although they can pass their own regulations on them. This makes marijuana accessible to patients throughout the state who need it.

Recreational marijuana in Massachusetts was legalized in 2016. Users could begin growing up to 6 plans at home at this time. However, Massachusetts recreational dispensaries did not open until 2018. While individual towns are not allowed to ban medical dispensaries, they are allowed to ban recreational dispensaries.

  • Does Massachusetts have medical marijuana?

Yes, the state of Massachusetts has made medical marijuana available to patients who need it since 2013. Although there is a recreational marijuana program in Massachusetts, patients with chronic health conditions can still apply for a medical marijuana card.

There are benefits to getting a medical marijuana card if you qualify for one. For example, medical marijuana is taxed at a much lower rate than recreational marijuana, so you’ll save money in the long run. Additionally, medical marijuana cardholders have much higher possession limits, which means you can purchase larger quantities at one time than a recreational patient without facing any fines or legal penalties. Medical dispensaries also sell higher-dose products than recreational dispensaries.

  • Does Medicaid cover medical marijuana?

Medicaid does not currently cover medical marijuana products. This is because marijuana is not yet legal on a federal level. Private health insurance companies also will not cover medical marijuana, for the same reason. This means patients will not only pay for medical marijuana products on their own, but also the Massachusetts medical card registration fee and any doctor’s appointments related to medical marijuana. Patients who are enrolled in MassHealth can have their registration fee waived.

  • How old do you have to be to buy edibles?

Edible products are available at both recreational and medical marijuana dispensaries in Massachusetts. If you want to purchase edibles from a Massachusetts recreational dispensary, you must be over the age of 21. However, anyone with a qualifying condition over the age of 18 can get a medical marijuana card in Massachusetts. This means that you can purchase edibles at a younger age with a medical marijuana card.

Patients under the age of 18 with a qualifying medical condition can also get a medical card and purchase edibles with the help of a caregiver. In Massachusetts, this caregiver must be your parent or legal guardian if you are under 18. The caregiver will visit the medical dispensary and purchase products for you. Adult patients who are physically unable to visit the dispensary can also designate a caregiver. For adult patients, the caregiver does not have to be a parent or family member.

  • Do you need a medical card for dispensaries in Massachusetts?

Because recreational marijuana in Massachusetts is legal, you do not need a medical card to visit most dispensaries. In fact, you don’t even need to be a resident of Massachusetts – you just need to have a government-issued ID and be over the age of 21.

However, you will need a medical card to visit a Massachusetts medical dispensary. These dispensaries are only available to qualifying patients. They offer lower tax rates and sell higher quantities of marijuana.

  • How old do you have to be to buy marijuana?

To buy Massachusetts recreational weed, you must be over the age of 21. However, there is more flexibility for patients with qualifying medical conditions. Anyone over the age of 18 who has the conditions that qualify for a medical card can apply in Massachusetts. Caregivers can also purchase medical marijuana for pediatric patients who qualify.
