Each state has a specific renewal window that grants you a certain amount of time to renew your medical card. Having these renewal windows help ensure that people aren’t trying to renew their medical cards months before they actually expire.

Medical Marijuana Card Renewal Windows Per State

As much as we’d love for MMJ cards to last forever, they do have expiration dates — and these dates vary from state to state.

However, you can’t renew your medical marijuana card just any time. 

Depending on the state, you have a specific window of time that you can renew your medical marijuana card. This tends to be about a month or two before your card expires, and you simply cannot renew until that time.

• • Arkansas: 60 days before MMJ card expiration
  • Illinois: 45 days 
  • Iowa: 60 days 
  • Louisiana: 8 weeks or 32 days 
  • Maryland: N/A – Check with MCA 
  • Massachusetts: 60 days 
  • Michigan: 90 days 
  • Missouri: 60 days (no less than 30 days prior)
  • New Jersey: 60 days 
  • New York: 30 days 
  • Ohio: 90 days 
  • Oklahoma: 30 days 
  • Pennsylvania: 60 days 
  • Virginia: 45 days 
  • West Virginia: 30 days before MMJ card expiration

Essentially, these windows mean that you cannot renew your medical marijuana card until your card is within this time slot. 

For example, if you’re in Arkansas, you cannot renew your card until it’s less than 60 days before your card expires. Even if your card expires in 61 days, you have to wait until the 60-day window to re-apply. 

But, if your AR MMJ card expires in 40 days, or even 12 days, you’ll be able to renew. It’s as simple as that. Just make sure to double-check the renewal windows for your specific state.
