Whether you’re just traveling or you’re planning on moving to Houston, if you’re a fan of cannabis, it’s crucial to know where you can buy your legal weed. But, are there dispensaries in Houston, Texas?

Cannabis in Houston, is, well, complicated. So, let’s dive right into whether or not you can find a dispensary in Houston — and where else you may be able to pick up your MMJ products.

Is Marijuana Legal in Houston?

Like the rest of the Lone Star State, only medical marijuana is legal in Texas. Unfortunately, it’s not quite the same as other MMJ programs, and you’re quite limited in both the products you can buy and the dispensaries you can shop from.

Texas’ Compassionate Use Program is quite strict and only permits low-THC products. These products cannot contain more than 1% THC.

Oh, and smoking cannabis is technically illegal, too.

Thankfully, advocates throughout Texas are fighting for cannabis reform, working to make the plant more accessible than it is now — both for medical patients and recreational consumers.

Are There Dispensaries in Houston, Texas?

Unfortunately, there is not a medical marijuana dispensary right in Houston. But, as we’ll talk about next, Houston does have marijuana pick-up locations. (Don’t worry, we’ll explain.)

It’s important to note that Texas only has three dispensaries that are currently registered with the state’s MMJ program. And, as we mentioned, none of them are located in Houston.

Thankfully, this does not mean that you’re out of luck if you’re a medical marijuana cardholder in Houston. In fact, you’ve got plenty of options when it comes to picking up high-quality products.

A medical card today, cheaper weed tomorrow.

Having an MMJ card means paying less for your top-shelf bud -- and getting more of it.

How Medical Marijuana Pick-Up Stations Work

In Texas, medical marijuana pick-up locations operate as part of the TCUP. These locations are not traditional storefronts like dispensaries in other states but are instead designated areas where patients with valid medical cannabis prescriptions can pick up their orders.

Here’s how they work:

  1. Place an Online Order: Patients can order medical cannabis products online or over the phone from licensed dispensaries like Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation or goodblend. Simply pick out the products that most appeal to you!
  2. Order Fulfillment and Pickup: After placing an order, you’ll choose a nearby pick-up location from a list provided by the dispensary. You must provide a government-issued ID at the time of pick-up to verify your identity and prescription status.
  3. Delivery Option: In addition to pick-up locations, some dispensaries also offer home delivery services. This can be especially convenient for patients who have mobility issues or live far from the nearest pick-up location.
  4. Pick Up Your Product! All that’s left to do is travel to your pick-up location at the dedicated time and grab your product. Again, make sure you have your ID!

There may not be dispensaries in Houston; however, as a Texas medical marijuana patient, you have a few different options regarding pick-up locations in Houston:

The Benefits of Having a Texas Medical Card

As a medical marijuana patient, you enjoy countless benefits in Texas.

First and foremost, a medical marijuana card allows access to cannabis products that are otherwise unavailable in the state due to its strict cannabis laws. After all, only medical marijuana is legal in Texas.

Medical cannabis products, such as tinctures, edibles, and topicals, offer patients a legal and controlled way to alleviate their symptoms without relying on traditional pharmaceuticals that may have undesirable side effects.

In addition to the therapeutic benefits, having a medical marijuana card provides legal protection for patients.

MMJ cardholders can legally possess and use low-THC cannabis products in Texas, ensuring they are in compliance with state laws.

Finally, the convenience offered by the program is a huge win for Texas residents. Patients with a medical marijuana card can place orders online or by phone and pick them up at designated locations across the state, or even have them delivered directly to their homes.
