If you’re a Missourian that suffers from depression, you know why depression is widely considered one of the most debilitating conditions in the world. If you consume cannabis and it makes you feel better, you might be curious if depression is one of the qualifying medical conditions in Missouri to get an MMJ card.

Can you get a medical card for depression in Missouri? Can you get a medical card for anxiety in Missouri? The two often go hand in hand, after all.

At Elevate Holistics, we believe people should have the opportunity and freedom to give their body the natural medicine it deserves. If marijuana helps alleviate some of depression or anxiety’s debilitating symptoms, we strongly support safe access to medical cannabis products for those it can help.

Can you get a medical card for depression in Missouri, though? Is it on the list of qualifying medical conditions in Missouri?

Let’s take a look.

Can You Get A Medical Card For Depression In Missouri?

Depression affects hundreds of millions of people around the world, including more than 17 million people in the U.S. alone. The prevalence of depression is overwhelming, experts maintain it’s “reached epidemic levels.”

While traditional antidepressants work well for some people, they don’t work for everyone.

Although marijuana might not work for everyone when it comes to supporting depression, it does work well for some people.

And not everyone wants to take prescription medication to manage their mental health.

A recent study of people with clinical depression that use medical cannabis discovered that those that use marijuana had lower depression scores than those who didn’t. Participants of the same study who started using marijuana in the follow-up period also experienced a decreased prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms.

While more research is certainly needed, MMJ does seem to help.

Self-medicating with marijuana to ease symptoms of depression is common. If you or someone you love has discovered cannabis helps with depression and anxiety, there are several states where depression is one of the qualifying medical conditions for an MMJ card.

Is Missouri one of them?

Is Depression One Of The Qualifying Medical Conditions For An MMJ Card In MO?

Using a medical card for depression is actually extremely common in the Show Me State. At the beginning of 2022, close to 17% of Missouri MMJ cards were used for mental health reasons (depression, anxiety, PTSD, etc.).

According to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS), qualifying medical conditions for an MMJ card include:

  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Intractable migraines that are unresponsive to other treatment
  • Chronic medical conditions that cause severe, persistent pain or persistent muscle spasms (including but not limited to: multiple sclerosis, seizures, Parkinson’s disease, and Tourette’s syndrome)
  • Debilitating psychiatric disorders (including but not limited to: post-traumatic stress order) that are diagnosed by a state-licensed psychiatrist
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or acquired immune deficiency syndrome
  • Chronic medical conditions normally treated with prescription medications that could lead to physical or psychological dependence (when a physician determines that medical marijuana may be effective and safer than the prescription medication)
  • Terminal illness
  • Any chronic or debilitating medical condition a medical professional believes would benefit from medical marijuana (including but not limited to hepatitis C)
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS/Lou Gehrig’s disease), inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), Crohn’s disease, Huntington’s disease, autism, neuropathies, sickle cell anemia, agitation of Alzheimer’s disease, cachexia, and wasting syndrome.

With more than 17 qualifying medical conditions in Missouri, residents that meet any of these conditions have the freedom to naturally support their health with cannabis products.

Can you actually get a medical card for depression in Missouri, though? Can you get a medical card for anxiety in Missouri?

Yes, you can.

How To Qualify For A Medical Marijuana Card In Missouri For Depression

Although the DHHS does not recognize “depression” as one of the qualifying medical conditions in Missouri for a medical card, “debilitating psychiatric disorders” diagnosed by a licensed psychiatrist are acceptable.

This means that if you’ve received a diagnosis, you may be eligible for a medical card for depression.

Another one of the qualifying medical conditions in Missouri is a “chronic medical condition that is normally treated with prescription medications that could lead to physical or psychological dependence.”

While physical and psychological dependency on antidepressants remains controversial, there is evidence to support that they may cause adverse effects in some individuals. If a physician determines that medical marijuana may be a better alternative, you may qualify for your MO marijuana card.

Missouri medical marijuana law also states that “in the professional judgment of a physician, any other chronic, debilitating or other medical condition” is one of the qualifying conditions for an MMJ card. This means if a physician decides that your depression is a debilitating condition, you may qualify for your Missouri medical marijuana card.
