Medical Marijuana in Ohio
Ohio legalized medical marijuana for qualifying patients in 2016. Since then, the program, the Medical Marijuana Control Program, has thrived within Ohio, serving thousands of patients every year. As more and more residents register in the program, the state continues to see the opening of ethical, professional dispensaries all across Ohio. For cardholders, this makes the entire cannabis-buying experience so worthwhile.
Currently, recreational cannabis is not yet legal in the Buckeye State, leaving those with qualifying medical conditions the only ones accessible to legal marijuana. There is a chance that this will change in the near future, but only the ballots can tell.
If you do have an MMJ card in Ohio, you should know that at-home cultivation is illegal. Even if you’re qualified to grow, you cannot cultivate in your home within the state. Also, patients can purchase up to a 45-day supply of cannabis products when shopping, so purchase accordingly!
How Many Dispensaries Are in Ohio?
While Ohio doesn’t have a huge selection of dispensaries, there is a handful that you can choose from all across the Birthplace of Aviation.
Currently, there are just over 50 licensed cannabis dispensaries in Ohio. However, this small number is due to the fact that Ohio has placed a limit on the number of dispensary licenses they will provide. Right now, the cap on OH dispensaries is 60. But, there has been a lot of debate about raising this number, allowing residents more widespread access to medical marijuana. Unfortunately, as it stands, the average MMJ cardholder drives nearly 30 miles to their local dispensary.
With nearly 150,000 medical marijuana patients in Ohio, many believe that 50 dispensaries just isn’t enough. Fingers crossed that the state will change its mind and expand its dispensary limit— even if it’s just a little.
