It's hard for me to really recommend Elevate Holistics because I have had difficulty with My Registration and maneuvering My Way Through The Website. I have been able to communicate with EV's Staff so hopefully tomorrow or Tuesday I will look forward to completing My Registration.

Getting medical marijuana in New Jersey can be a confusing process if you haven’t done it before. Although New Jersey has legalized marijuana for recreational use, getting a medical card can help you save money on cannabis products and purchase larger quantities.

At Elevate Holistics, we’ll walk you through how to get a medical marijuana card in NJ, and our NJ medical marijuana doctors can help you get the certification you need for a medical card.

How to Get a Medical Marijuana Card in New Jersey

In order to get a NJ medical marijuanas card, you’ll need to go through the New Jersey Medical Marijuana Program, or NJMMP. In order to qualify for this program, you’ll need to have one of the state’s qualifying conditions.

The first step to getting your medical marijuana card is to get approval from a licensed doctor. With Elevate Holistics, you can schedule an appointment with medicinal marijuana doctors in NJ online. After verifying that you meet the NJMMP requirements, they will provide you with a patient reference number that you will use to log into the state’s online portal.

Once you’ve logged in and created an account, you will need to provide a photograph, proof of New Jersey residence, and proof of identification as part of your application. You’ll need an unexpired driver’s license or government-issued ID from the state of New Jersey for your proof of identification. For proof of residency, you can use a bank statement, utility bill, or government correspondence that has your address on it. Your photograph should be taken on a plain white background with no filters. Both eyes should be open and you should use a neutral facial expression. After you have submitted these required documents, your application will be sent to the board for further review. They will follow up with you via email after they have reviewed your application.

If your application is approved, you will then be emailed a link to go back to the online portal and pay the registration fee. Once this step is complete, you will receive your medical marijuana card and can start purchasing the cannabis products that you need.

Medical Marijuana Qualifying Conditions

In order to get your New Jersey medical marijuana card, you must have one of the qualifying medical conditions approved by the medicinal marijuana program. The NJMMP conditions list is updated occasionally to reflect new research and the consensus of the medical community. Medical marijuana can be used to treat both physical and mental health conditions in New Jersey.

The current conditions approved under NJ medicinal weed requirements are:

What Is The Cost Of A Medical Marijuana Card?

The cost of medical marijuana in NJ starts with a $100 fee for your medical marijuana card. This fee applies to both patients and caregivers. If you are a senior, veteran, or are otherwise receiving government assistance, you may qualify for a reduced fee of $20. Your medical marijuana card is valid for one year, after which you will have the option to renew. You will need to pay a fee to renew your medical marijuana card.

You’ll also need to pay for your consultation with a medical marijuana doctor. The fees for this will vary depending on what provider you use. Elevate Holistics offers secure online consultations starting at $75. Health insurance currently does not cover the cost of getting your medical marijuanas card in NJ.

How Long Does It Take To Receive Your MMJ Card?

The process of getting your medical marijuana card in New Jersey typically takes less than two month. At Elevate Holistics, your initial online consultation only takes 30 minutes, after which you will immediately be able to log on and complete the first part of your application.

After the first part of your application has been submitted, the NJMMP program will review it and get back to you. This process can take up to 30 days, but may be completed faster depending on the volume of applications they are currently processing. Once your application is approved, they will mail you your new medical card in seven to 10 days.

History of Medical Marijuana In New Jersey

Medical marijuana has been legal in New Jersey since 2010. This law required patients to get their marijuana through state-licensed treatment centers. These are called alternative treatment centers and are used in lieu of traditional dispensaries. For the first several years that medical marijuana was legal in New Jersey, the NJ medical marijuana program was one of the strictest in the entire country.

Between 2017 and 2019, the New Jersey state government slowly expanded access to medical marijuana. They did this by expanding the number of qualifying conditions as well as expanding the number of legal cannabis providers, increasing purchase limits, and more.

During the November 2020 election, New Jersey voted to legalize marijuana for recreational use through a ballot measure. However, the recreational marijuana program has not yet been set up in New Jersey, as it will take time to get the regulations set up. For now, residents still need a medical marijuana card to purchase cannabis in New Jersey.

New Jersey Medical Marijuana Laws

Now that you’ve learned how to get medical marijuana in NJ, it’s important to make sure you’re familiar with medical marijuana laws in NJ.

Medical Marijuana Possession Limits

The current New Jersey laws state that medical marijuana patients or caregivers can purchase up to two ounces of cannabis in a 30 day period, based on provider recommendations. However, New Jersey law doesn’t currently have any possession limits for medical marijuana patients, meaning that you can technically possess more than two ounces at a time if you have not exceeded your purchase limits. Since the end of February, marijuana possession has been decriminalized, meaning that you won’t be subject to charges if you’re caught with cannabis but do not have a medical card.

Grow Limits In NJ

New Jersey has not allowed medical marijuana patients to grow their own products. However, the recent legalization of marijuana means that this could change.

How To Register As A Caregiver In New Jersey

If you take care of someone who meets the medical marijuana NJ conditions and cannot get it on their own, you can register as a caregiver to purchase cannabis for them. Caregivers will need to go through the same approval process that a patient would on the NJMMP website. The patient will need to get certified by a medical marijuana doctor, and then the caregiver will complete the rest of the process to get the card.

However, caregivers will also need to submit fingerprints and go through a background check. Like a primary patient, caregivers need to pay a $100 fee. A patient can designate two caregivers if necessary.

New Jersey Medical Marijuana Doctors

To get your medical marijuana card, you’ll need to get certified by NJ medical marijuana doctors. Not all doctors in New Jersey are approved to give medical marijuana certifications – in fact, New Jersey has a very small pool of registered doctors when compared with other states. Elevate Holistics works with registered NJMMP doctors, so you don’t have to search on your own to find one.

Medical Marijuana Dispensaries In NJ

The NJMMP dispensaries are called alternative treatment centers and are managed by the state. There are only six alternative treatment centers throughout the state, so you may need to travel to access the nearest one. Once the new recreational marijuana law has been fully implemented, it is likely that more dispensaries will open up throughout the state. However, we don’t know yet exactly what these new dispensaries will look like or how they will differentiate between medical and recreational patients.

Can You Use Your NJ Card In Another State?

New Jersey now has reciprocity for people who have marijuana cards in other states. You can use a marijuana card from another state in NJ for the first six months you are there. There are some other states that may recognize a New Jersey medical card due to their own reciprocity laws. The most notable states that have reciprocity laws include Rhode Island and Nevada. There are also states that won’t accept your New Jersey medical card, but will allow you to apply for a local medical card regardless of residency.

Elevate Holistics makes it easy to apply for your New Jersey medical card online. We offer secure and HIPAA compliant appointments with registered doctors online. Appointments are just 30 minutes and start at $75. Our doctors will walk you through the process of how to get medicinal weed in NJ and can answer any questions you have about cannabis dosing, NJMMP strains, and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I qualify as a patient in the New Jersey Medicinal Marijuana Program (MMP)?

To become a registered patient with the MMP, you must:

    • Maintain a bona fide relationship with a physician who is registered with the program. A bona fide relationship is defined as a relationship in which the physician has ongoing responsibility for the assessment, care, and treatment of a patient’s debilitating medical condition, where:
      • The physician-patient relationship has existed for at least one year; or
      • The physician has seen and/or assessed the patient for the debilitating medical condition on at least four visits; or
      • The physician assumes responsibility for providing management and care of the patient’s debilitating medical condition after conducting a comprehensive medical history and physical examination, including a personal review of the patient’s medical record maintained by other treating physicians reflecting the patient’s reaction and response to conventional medical therapies.
    • Be a New Jersey resident.
    • Be diagnosed with a qualifying medical condition by a New Jersey health care practitioner registered with the MMP.

  • What are the qualifying medical conditions in New Jersey?

    Approved debilitating medical conditions include:

    • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
    • Anxiety
    • Cancer
    • Chronic Pain
    • Dysmenorrhea
    • Glaucoma
    • Inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease
    • Intractable skeletal spasticity
    • Migraine
    • Multiple sclerosis
    • Muscular dystrophy
    • Opioid Use Disorder
    • Positive status for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
    • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
    • Seizure disorder, including epilepsy
    • Terminal illness with prognosis of less than 12 months to live
    • Tourette Syndrome

  • Can minors qualify for the MMP in New Jersey?

Yes. Minors (under 18) must have a designated legal guardian and must acquire written confirmation from a physician trained in Pediatrics.

Designation as a legal guardian for a qualified minor patient exempts you from the application fee. The required fee for a minor patient is $100; however, if the guardian qualifies for a reduced registration fee, the minor patient would also qualify for the reduced fee. Minor patients may have up to two caregivers.

  • How do I apply for a patient ID card in New Jersey?

You will need to register as a patient on the NJMMP website.

You will need the reference number that was provided to you by your Medicinal Marijuana Program (MMP) physician (this number can be found on your copy of the attending physician statement) What is this?

An email address is required (MMP sends all communications related to your registration, including payment details, through email).

You will also need a photograph, government issued photo ID, and proof of New Jersey residency. And, finally, you will also need to pay the registration fee.

Note: If you wish to register a caregiver, and they are not an immediate family member, they must get a criminal background check via fingerprints. There is a printable form on the bottom of the page where you upload your documents. On the form there will be information on how to make an appointment with IdentoGo to have fingerprints collected. Both the caregiver and patient must pay a registration fee for their MMP identification cards. If a background check is required, the registration fees will not be set until the caregiver’s criminal background check is cleared which can take up to 3 weeks.

  • Do I need a physician referral to qualify for the NJMMP?

Yes. A physician must certify that a patient has an approved debilitating medical condition to participate in the MMP.

Health care practitioners must be registered with the program in order to authorize your eligibility. A list of health care practitioners is available on the NJMMP website. Under the ‘Patient’ tab, select the option that says ‘Find a Doctor’. This will assist you in locating a health care practitioner in their area.

New Jersey currently allows telehealth visits—virtual visits over the phone or computer. For a hassle-free, same-day visit with a compassionate cannabis doctor, book an appointment with Elevate Holistics today!

  • Can I have a caregiver?

Yes. You may have a caregiver if your condition is so severe you cannot physically go to your alternative treatment center (ATC) alone. You may designate up to two caregivers.

A caregiver can purchase medicinal marijuana from an ATC without your presence. They are usually a friend or family member. Caregivers can be added at any time during registration and must go through the same process as patients to receive a card.

Caregivers are required to submit fingerprints for a criminal background investigation. The fingerprinting forms will be available once the caregiver has begun the online registration.

Medical Cannabis Certification for New-Jersey

Why Medical Marijuana Doctors are Necessary.

The vast majority of doctors don’t have a great understanding of cannabinoids due to a woefully archaic medical schooling system. In fact, most medical schools don’t even offer classes on the endocannabinoid system! This is the system in the body that interacts with THC, CBD, and other phytocannabinoids in cannabis. Crazy, right? While this is changing, the majority of doctors in America can’t truly point people in the right direction when it comes to cannabis as a medicine. This is where Elevate Holistics comes in by offering you a full staff of healthcare professionals that can take you from CBD to THC, to pharmaceutical interactions, and treatment plans. Make sure to ask your physician and Elevate staff anything on your mind so we can get you the resources you need to Elevate your health naturally.
