Booked an appointment at 2pm Thursday afternoon and Elevate Holistics sent me a text at 9pm Saturday night letting me know my application is ready for payment and to be sent to the state, wow. Overall a wonderful experience! Coming from a recreationally legal state to a medically legal state I honestly expected the worst (proof of prescription medications, years of health history, etc); Elevate Holistics made everything an incredibly smooth process with none of the above mentioned we're needed - just honest, chronic issues that benefit from cannabis products!

How to Get a Medical Card in Michigan

With Elevate Holistics, getting a Michigan medical marijuana card is as easy as 1, 2, 3. With our telehealth platform and expert cannabis doctors, you can get your medical recommendation right from home. From there, all you’ll have to do is register with the state and follow their instructions. But, don’t worry! We’re breaking down all the details you need to know about getting a medical marijuana card in Michigan.

Who Can Apply for a Medical Card in Michigan?

First thing’s first, who can apply for a medical card in Michigan? What are the requirements?

To apply for a Michigan medical marijuana card, you must be an MI resident with a qualifying medical condition. The state has outlined various medical conditions they deem appropriate for medical marijuana consumption, and if you qualify for at least one of these conditions, then you’ll get a medical recommendation and can apply for your MMJ card. However, you simply cannot apply if you don’t have this recommendation or proper MI identification.

You’ll also need to be 18 years old to apply for the Michigan Medical Marijuana Program (MMMP) on your own. If you’re under 18, you can still get an MMJ card, but you’ll need a caregiver to complete the registration process, purchase cannabis, and so forth. (We’ll talk more about the caregiver process in detail, later, if you’re curious.)

Medical Marijuana Qualifying Conditions

As we discussed, Michigan has a list of qualifying conditions required for a medical marijuana card. Those conditions are the following:

Once again, you only need to have one of the above medical conditions to qualify for a MI MMJ card. And, if you’re worried about qualifying, don’t be! That’s what Elevate Holistics is here for. We’ll help you get your medical card, even if you’re unsure you qualify.

What Documents Do I Need to Apply for a Medical Marijuana Card?

To apply for a medical marijuana card in Michigan, you’ll need a few different documents to prove legitimacy. First, you will need to fill out and complete the state’s application form. You’ll also need a Physician Certification Form — which is in the Application packet. This is the form your doctor will fill out to certify that you have a qualifying medical condition.

Michigan also requires proof of MI residency. This can be a copy of your valid Michigan driver’s license OR your valid Michigan voter registration. (Keep in mind that if you use your voter registration, you’ll also have to submit proof of identity through any government-issued document demonstrating your name and date of birth.)

How Much Does a Michigan Medical Marijuana Card Cost?

Luckily for you, a Michigan medical marijuana card isn’t going to break the bank. The application fee for the card itself is only $40. Your doctor’s appointment will vary depending on where you go, but places like Elevate Holistics offer our services at significantly discounted rates.

Michigan Marijuana Laws

If you’re getting your MMJ card in the Great Lake State, you need to be aware of Michigan marijuana laws to ensure you’re following rules and regulations.

In terms of possession laws, amounts differ depending on whether you’re a medical patient or a recreational consumer. If you’re a medical patient in MI, then you can possess up to 10 ounces of cannabis at one time. Recreational consumers can only possess up to 2.5 ounces, with no more than 15 of those grams being cannabis concentrates.

Growing medical marijuana in Michigan is also legal for both medical and recreational consumers. Medical patients can cultivate and harvest from up to 12 cannabis plants in their homes. However, you must state your intent to grow on the application itself when registering with the medical program.

Recreational consumers can grow up to 12 plants at once; however, you cannot cultivate more than 10 ounces at home. Both recreational and medical consumers must keep their plants in locked, enclosed spaces inaccessible to the public or minors.

Where Can I Buy Medical Marijuana in Michigan?

Buying medical marijuana in Michigan is the easy part. Once you have your valid medical marijuana card, all you have to do is visit your local dispensary. There are numerous Michigan dispensaries throughout the state; you just have to find the one that sells the products you like best — and for the right price. You cannot purchase your medical marijuana from any other businesses, only licensed dispensaries.

How to Become a Medical Marijuana Caregiver in Michigan

If you’re interested in how to become a medical marijuana caregiver in Michigan, we can help you out. Luckily, the process is relatively straightforward.

First, you must know that caregivers must be at least 21 years old and have never been convicted of any violent or drug-related felonies. Along with this, primary caregivers cannot have committed any felonies within the last ten years.

To become a caregiver yourself, you must meet MI’s requirements. From there, a patient has to submit either a complete Application Packet or a complete Add or Change Caregiver Form that designates you as their caregiver. Along with this, you’ll present your valid state ID or personal ID card to prove identification. Then, you’ll wait for approval!

Can I Use a Michigan Medical Card in Another State?

This depends. If where you’re traveling to allows medical marijuana reciprocity, you may be able to use your Michigan medical card elsewhere. However, Michigan currently doesn’t offer a reciprocity program for medical patients.

If you’re coming from out of state and want to purchase cannabis in Michigan, you’ll have to be at least 21 years of age and have a legal IDYou can’t buy more than an ounce, and you, of course, cannot bring it with you out of Michigan.

Renewing a Michigan Medical Card

If you’ve had your Michigan medical marijuana card for three years and to renew, or you need to update your information, doing so is easy. All you have to do is visit the program’s website: and follow their instructions. You can complete the entire process online these days with just a few simple clicks.

If you prefer to do things in person, that’s okay! You can renew by submitting a paper application, too. Simply place your complete Application Form, Physician Certification Form, proof of residency, and your $40 application fee in one envelope and send it to the Michigan Medical Marijuana Program.

Most frequently MMJ asked questions

  • Who can possess marijuana in Michigan?

Medical marijuana patients and adults 21 years old and older can possess marijuana in Michigan. However, you must keep your product in your private residence, as public consumption is illegal.

  • How much medical marijuana can I possess?

Medical patients can possess up to 10 ounces of cannabis at once, while recreational consumers can have up to 2.5 ounces.

  • When did medical marijuana become legal in Michigan?

Medical marijuana became legal in Michigan back in 2008 with the Michigan Compassionate Care Initiative. At the time, this measure only legalized cannabis use for seriously ill patients. However, as the years have passed, the list of qualifying medical conditions for an MMJ card in Michigan has grown significantly.

  • Can I go to a dispensary without a card in Michigan?

You can enter a recreational dispensary without a card as long as you’re at least 21 years old. However, you cannot enter any medical dispensary without a valid MMMP medical card.

  • Where can I use medical marijuana in Michigan?

You can consume Michigan medical marijuana strictly at home or in private spaces throughout the Great Lakes State. Public consumption — minus a few exceptions — is illegal in Michigan, as well as consuming in a vehicle. If you do not own the place you live in, you must check with your landlord to see if cannabis consumption is okay with them.

  • Is marijuana legal in Michigan?

The Michigan marijuana legalization process technically started in the 1970s, when the city of Ann Arbor voted to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana. This was incredibly progressive for the time period, and Michigan was one of the first cities to do this. Michigan opted to legalize marijuana for medical use in 2008.

At the time, the law only allowed patients to grow their own plants. It did not technically allow for dispensaries, although many began operating in the years after this law was passed. The law was amended in 2016 to make dispensaries legal. This amendment also allowed patients to buy edibles, topical oils, and other forms of marijuana besides flower. These new Michigan edible laws offered a good alternative to smoking for those who don’t enjoy it.

Cannabis was officially legalized for recreational use in Michigan in 2018. The first recreational dispensaries opened in 2019. Michigan’s laws are unique in that they now allow anyone to cultivate up to 12 plants at home in addition to being able to buy from a dispensary.

  • How much is a medical marijuana card in Michigan?

To get a Michigan medical card, you will need to pay an initial application fee of $40. If you are approved, your card will last for two years. Keep in mind that you will need to pay this fee for every medical card renewal as well.

In addition to the application fee, you will also need to pay for your initial consultation with a doctor. Keep in mind that insurance companies do not currently cover any expenses related to marijuana, as it is not yet legal on a federal level. The cost of this appointment will vary depending on where you go – some providers charge as much as $200. Elevate Holistics offers telehealth appointments with medical marijuana doctors starting at $75.

Although you will need to pay some fees in order to get your MMMP card, it can actually save you money in the long run if you have one of the qualifying conditions. This is because medical marijuana cardholders don’t pay as much in taxes as recreational marijuana users do.

  • Where can I get my medical marijuana card in Michigan?

To get a medical marijuana card in Michigan, you will need to start by making an appointment with a doctor. Your doctor will need to verify that you have one of the qualifying conditions for medical marijuana. You can visit a doctor in-person or use a telehealth service like Elevate Holistics. You’ll need to make sure that the doctor you choose is licensed and willing to provide medical marijuana evaluations, as not all doctors do.

If you do qualify, your doctor will help you through the medical marijuana application process. You will need to create an account online, and then you will need to mail in a complete medical marijuana application packet. This will include your doctor’s certification as well as your application fee and proof of residency. You will then receive an email with a temporary card when your application has been approved.

  • Is marijuana legal in Michigan for recreational use?

Marijuana has been legal for recreational use in Michigan since 2019. There are Michigan recreational dispensaries in every major city as well as small towns throughout the state. Anyone over the age of 21 can visit the dispensary and purchase the products they need. Dispensaries offer a wide selection of flower strains as well as many other cannabis products, and they can help patients find the best products for their needs.

In Michigan, you can possess up to 2.5 ounces of marijuana in public or 10 ounces of marijuana at home. Michigan law also allows anyone to grow up to 12 cannabis plants at home. Although marijuana possession is legal, you still can’t consume marijuana everywhere. Many private businesses and public spaces alike have restrictions regarding marijuana use. If you want to use marijuana in Michigan, make sure you’re in a safe location before starting.

  • How to get a medical card in Michigan?

In order to get a medical card, you must have one of the qualifying conditions for medical card in Michigan. Michigan’s laws currently allow patients with a wide range of chronic conditions to apply for medical marijuana cards. Some of these conditions include cancerAlzheimer’s diseaseHIV/AIDSPTSD, spinal cord injuries, and many more.

Michigan also allows medical marijuana prescriptions for anyone with a chronic condition that results in severe pain, severe nausea, wasting syndrome, seizures, or severe muscle spasms. This qualification providers some flexibility for doctors to prescribe medical marijuana to anyone that might need it. If you think you could benefit from medical marijuana but aren’t sure you qualify, it may be worth talking to a doctor to see what options are available to you.

  • Do dispensaries track how much you buy?

Although marijuana is legal for recreational use in Michigan, there are still possession limits, which begs the question – do Michigan marijuana dispensaries track how much you buy?

Most dispensaries ask for some patient information when you make a purchase, and they will typically swipe your ID as well. Most dispensaries will keep track of your data for marketing purposes, not legal purposes, and they won’t share your personal information. However, Michigan residents are not allowed to purchase more than 10 ounces of flower or an equivalent amount of other products per month. This means that dispensaries may stop you once you’ve hit the Michigan recreational purchase limit.
