How To Get A Medical Marijuana Card In Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania opted to legalize medical marijuana in 2016, and since then, attitudes towards cannabis have been changing in the Keystone State. Here’s how to get a medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania and important PA medical marijuana laws you should know about.

Getting A Medical Marijuana Card in Pennsylvania

The process to get a Pennsylvania medical marijuana card doesn’t have to be difficult. Here’s what you need to know before starting your PA medical marijuana application.

Steps For Getting A Pennsylvania Medical Card

Step 1:

Make sure that you qualify

The first step to getting a medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania is to make sure that you qualify. There are a number of chronic health conditions that can qualify you for a card in Pennsylvania. You might be surprised by how many conditions are on this list.

Once you’ve been certified by one of our physicians via video appointment, you’ll need to visit medicalmarijuana.pa.gov and complete their online registration. In order to do this, you’ll need a valid Pennsylvania ID. After you complete the patient registration, you’ll get a patient ID number, which you will need to save in order to log back in later. You’ll also need to create a username and password.

Step 2:

Get certified by a physician

The next step is to get certified by a physician. One of the easiest ways to get your certification is to talk to one of Elevate Holistics’ PA medical marijuana doctors. They are very familiar with Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana laws and qualifying conditions and can answer any of your questions. If you qualify, they will provide you with the certification you need in order to get your card. You’ll need to have your patient ID number for this.

Step 3:

Purchase your medical marijuana card

After your doctor confirms your certification, you’ll get an email directing you to a page where you can purchase your medical marijuana card. The fee to purchase a medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania is $50, although some people may qualify for discounts. Your card will be mailed to you in two to three weeks, and then you’ll be able to visit your local dispensary and purchase marijuana.

Where Can I Get Medical Marijuana After Getting A Card?

Once your card has been mailed to you, you can shop for marijuana products at approved PA medical marijuana dispensaries. There are now dispensaries available throughout the state of Pennsylvania. You’ll find dispensaries in major cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh as well as in smaller cities and towns throughout the state. There’s a good chance you have a dispensary just a short drive away from you. Elevate Holistics has dispensary partners around the country as well.

PA Medical Marijuana Doctors

When getting your medical marijuana certification, it’s important to find a doctor who understands Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana laws, as well as the ways that marijuana can affect your body. Many general practitioners don’t have much experience with marijuana specifically, which is why it’s always best to look for a doctor who is very familiar with how to get a medical marijuana card in PA. It’s also important to note that not every doctor in Pennsylvania is approved to participate in the program – they need to have special approval from the state in order to do so.

At Elevate Holistics, we work with board-certified doctors who are very familiar with medical marijuana. Not only can they help you get the certification that you need, but they can also recommend specific products and dosages to help with your condition. It’s normal to have questions when using medical marijuana for the first time, so having an experienced doctor will help put your mind at ease and make sure all of your concerns are addressed.

Becoming A Caregiver In Pennsylvania

If you’re disabled and cannot pick up medical marijuana yourself, you can have a caregiver register for a medical marijuana card to make these purchases for you. This is also an option for minors who can benefit from using medical marijuana.

To become a caregiver, you’ll need to follow most of the same processes that you would if you were getting a medical marijuana card for yourself. You’ll need to register through the Pennsylvania official website and create an account. Both you and the patient you are registering will need to have proof of Pennsylvania residency. The patient will need to be certified by a doctor, and then you’ll complete the process as normal.

As the caregiver, you will receive the medical card in the mail and use it to purchase marijuana for the patient. However, this card is only valid to purchase marijuana for this patient – you cannot purchase it for yourself or anyone else.

History of Medical Marijuana In Pennsylvania

The PA medical marijuana bill passed fairly recently in 2016. Prior to that, any use of marijuana was illegal in Pennsylvania. The laws surrounding medical marijuana have been consistently evolving since then.

PA Medical Marijuana Bill Passed

Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf signed a bill in 2016 legalizing the use of cannabis for 17 qualifying medical conditions. Originally, you could only purchase non-smokable forms of marijuana in Pennsylvania, but this was repealed in 2018. Prior to 2018, there was also a law in Pennsylvania where you could lose your driver’s license if you were caught with marijuana, but the state voted to repeal it as well.

Since then, the governor and other Pennsylvania democrats have pushed to decriminalize marijuana throughout the state and legalize it for recreational use. Many major cities throughout Pennsylvania have already voted to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana.

PA Medical Marijuana Laws

It’s important for anyone with a medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania to understand how the state’s medical marijuana laws work. Here’s what you’ll need to know.

Possession Limits In PA

If you have a medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania, you are allowed to possess up to a 30 day supply of approved cannabis products. If you don’t have a medical marijuana card, you cannot carry any marijuana with you. However, many cities in PA have opted to decriminalize possession of fewer than 30 grams of marijuana.

Cultivation Laws In PA

Cultivating marijuana in Pennsylvania is currently illegal. If you are caught cultivating marijuana, the penalties typically include jail time and a fine. Jail time can range from one to five years in prison, while fines can range anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000. These penalties depend on how much marijuana you are caught growing.

Reciprocity Laws in PA

Right now, Pennsylvania currently does not have a reciprocity law in place. This means that people who have a medical card in another state cannot currently purchase marijuana. However, the government has indicated that they would like to establish a reciprocity program in the future.

If you’re looking to get your medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania, you can use Elevate Holistics to do so. The process is entirely online and our board-certified doctors will make sure you get the support that you need.

Most frequently MMJ asked questions

  • Is marijuana legal in Pennsylvania?

Is weed legal in Pennsylvania? Right now, marijuana is only legal in Pennsylvania for medical use. Medical marijuana was made legal in PA in 2016, and the first medical sales happened in 2018. In order to qualify for a PA medical card, you will need to have one of the 23 qualifying conditions specified by the state and have your condition verified by a doctor.

  • Is recreational cannabis legal in Pennsylvania?

Recreational marijuana use is currently illegal in Pennsylvania. However, many major cities in Pennsylvania have decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana. This means that you will only receive a small fine rather than jail time in these cities.

In 2020, the governor of Pennsylvania pushed for the legalization of recreational marijuana, as people were still asking ‘is weed legal in PA?’ While the state’s legislature did not immediately respond, this does indicate that we could see Pennsylvania marijuana laws change in the future. Pennsylvania marijuana legalization would make cannabis products accessible to a much wider range of people and could make them more affordable as well.

  • How much does a medical card cost?

Many medical marijuana patients wonder about the fees associated with getting your medical card. Is medical marijuana covered by insurance, or do you have to pay out-of-pocket? Does Medicaid cover medical marijuana? Unfortunately, medical marijuana is currently not covered by any insurance programs, including Medicaid or Medicare. This is because marijuana is still illegal on a national level.

The fee for a medical marijuana card in Pennsylvania is $50 for both first-time registrations and renewals. Certain patients may be eligible for fee reductions based on their participation in programs like Medicaid, CHIP, SNAP, and more. Keep in mind that you will also need to pay out of pocket for your doctor’s visit to get approved for your medical marijuana card. Elevate Holistics offers secure virtual visits with licensed medical marijuana doctors in Pennsylvania starting at $75 each.

  • How much does medical marijuana cost?

If you’re on a budget, you’re likely wondering ‘how much does medical marijuanas cost?’ Unfortunately, medical marijuana Pennsylvania residents use is more expensive than it is in many other states due to the supply restrictions and other laws currently surrounding it.

The amount you’ll spend will vary depending on the specific type of cannabis you are trying to purchase and the quantity you need. At dispensaries in Pennsylvania, an eighth of an ounce of marijuana can range anywhere from $55 to $75, depending on the strain and grower.

Are edibles legal in Pennsylvania? Many people don’t enjoy smoking and want to consume cannabis in other forms. Unfortunately, edibles are not currently legal in Pennsylvania. However, there are some other forms of medical marijuana that you can purchase if you don’t want to smoke. Capsules, extracts, tinctures, topicals, and patches are all legal in Pennsylvania. Pricing for these products will vary depending on how much marijuana they contain.

  • How do I get a medical marijuana card?

Getting a medical marijuana prescription in Pennsylvania is fairly simple. The first step is to register online for the program through the Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Registry. During this step, you will need to provide your basic contact information. You will also need to prove Pennsylvania residency by having a driver’s license or state ID.

Then, you will need to have a licensed physician certify that you have one of the 23 qualifying conditions for medical marijuana. These conditions include debilitating chronic illnesses like cancer, HIV/AIDSmultiple sclerosisPTSD, and more, as well as more common conditions like anxiety and chronic pain. Because some of these conditions are relatively inclusive, it’s worth talking with a doctor if you believe you could benefit from medical marijuana. Services like Elevate Holistics allow you to talk with a doctor online, so you won’t need to go in person. Keep in mind that not all doctors are registered to recommend medical marijuana, so you’ll need to find one that is on the state registry.

Your doctor will submit your recommendation for medical marijuana directly to the state if you qualify. You’ll then need to go back online and pay the $50 registration fee. Once you’ve been approved, Pennsylvania will mail you your ID card and you will be able to visit dispensaries.

For your PA medical marijuanas card renewal, you will receive an email notification 60 days before your card expires. The email will contain a link directing you to a page where you can renew your card online. You will need to be re-certified by a medical marijuana doctor in order to renew. You will also need to pay another $50 yearly fee. They will then mail you a new medical marijuana card.

Patients under the age of 18 who have one of Pennsylvania’s qualifying conditions can get a medical marijuana card with a caregiver. Older patients who cannot visit the dispensary on their own due to their medical conditions can also designate a caregiver. The caregiver will need to register for the medical marijuana program and complete a background check. Then, they can visit the dispensary on behalf of the patient to get the medical marijuana they need. Caregivers cannot consume the medical marijuana themselves.

  • Can I use my medical card in another state?

If you travel frequently, you may be wondering if you can use your medical marijuana card while you’re on the road to get the treatment you need. Right now, nine states and Washington D.C. accept out-of-state medical cards, so you can use your Pennsylvania medical card if you are visiting one of these states. However, Pennsylvania does not currently have medical marijuana reciprocity, which means that if you have a medical marijuana card in another state, you cannot use it in Pennsylvania.
