How To Get A Medical Marijuana Card In Maryland
Marijuana has many unique medical benefits, and has been proven to be very effective for managing chronic pain. The state of Maryland legalized medical marijuana use in 2014, but you’ll need a medical marijuana card in order to purchase it. Below, we’ll walk you through how to get a medical marijuana card in Maryland and what you need to know as you start the process.
Steps For Getting A Maryland Medical Marijuana Card
Step 1
The first step to getting your Maryland medical marijuana card is registering as a patient with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. You can do this through their registry portal. To create an account, you will need a valid email address. Once you have an account set up, you can complete your registration online.
In order to complete your registration, you’ll need to provide:
- Proof of Maryland residency
- A government-approved photo ID
- The last four digits of your Social Security Number.
You’ll also need a passport-quality photograph, which will go on your medical marijuana card when it is eventually sent to you.
Step 2
After you have submitted an online application, you will get a verification email. You will need to click the link in this email in order to submit your application. If you don’t click this link, your application will not be processed.
Step 3
The next step is to obtain a medical certification from a doctor who is registered with the commission. This certification verifies that you have a qualifying condition for medical marijuana in Maryland. You can find doctors who prescribe medical marijuana in Maryland through the provider registry.
Elevate Holistics also works with medical marijuana doctors in Maryland to offer secure online appointments where you can obtain your certification.
Once you submit your written certification to the commission, they will review it. Once you are approved, they will send you an email with a link to your temporary medical marijuana card, which you can print out. Your permanent card will be mailed to you a few weeks later.
What Documents Are Needed?
When you apply to get a Maryland medical marijuana card, you’ll need to submit certain documents electronically in order to qualify.
First, you’ll need to have a valid email address and submit the last four digits of your Social Security number. You’ll also need to submit a digital copy of a valid photo ID. This can be a driver’s license, a state ID card, a US passport, or a military ID.
If your ID does not prove your Maryland residency, you will need to submit two additional documents to prove that you live in Maryland. You can choose from a long list of documents available on the commission’s website, which includes things like bank statements, utility bills, rental contracts, proof of home ownership, and more.
Finally, you will need to submit a high quality photo that clearly shows your face on a white background. One of the best ways to get this photo is to use an app or service that takes passport photos. Once your initial application has been received, you’ll also need a written certification from a licensed medical provider confirming that you have one of the approved Maryland medical marijuana conditions.
Qualifying Medical Conditions for a Maryland Medical Marijuana Card
In order to get a Maryland medical marijuana card, you need to have one of the state’s qualifying conditions. There are many physical and mental health conditions that fall within the state’s guidelines for medical marijuana use. These include any form of chronic pain, anorexia, post-traumatic stress disorder, seizures, and severe nausea. The Maryland medical marijuana qualifying conditions are quite broad, so it’s worth talking to a doctor if you think you could benefit from using medical marijuana.
The qualifying conditions for a Maryland medical marijuana card are as follows:
- Anorexia
- Cachexia or wasting syndrome
- Those on hospice or receiving palliative care
- Glaucoma
- Post-traumatic stress disorder
- Seizures
- Severe or chronic pain
- Severe nausea
- Severe or persistent muscle spasms
- Other chronic, severe medical conditions if the patient can prove that other treatments are ineffective
How Much Is A Medical Card in Maryland?
To create an account with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, you will need to pay an initial fee of $50. This fee is non-refundable. Maryland is unique in that you only need to renew your medical marijuana registration every three years, instead of having to renew it every year. The renewal fee is also $50.
You’ll also need to pay for your consultation with a medical marijuana doctor. It’s important to note that these sessions are not always covered by insurance. The cost will vary depending on what type of doctor you decide to see. Elevate Holistics offers affordable online appointments that start at $75 per session.
How Long Does It Take To Get A Medical Card In Maryland?
The process to get a Maryland medical marijuana card can be quite lengthy. After you submit your initial application, you’ll need to wait for a follow-up email from the commission. This can take anywhere from five days to 45 days.
Once you’ve gotten this follow-up email, you’ll be able to move forward and get your certification from a physician. Once this certification has been submitted, you’ll get your temporary card and you will be able to visit a dispensary. Overall, you should expect the process of getting a medical card in Maryland to take about two months.
Where Can I Get Medical Marijuana in Maryland?
Once you have your Maryland medical marijuana card, you will be able to visit a licensed dispensary and purchase marijuana products. There are licensed dispensaries throughout the state of Maryland, so there’s a good chance you will have one within a short drive of your home. Elevate Holistics partners with dispensaries around the country.
Medical Marijuana Doctors in Maryland
To get your written medical marijuana certification, you’ll need to visit a doctor who is registered with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. Not all doctors in Maryland are currently registered with the commission, although the state is currently pushing for more medical providers to join the program.
Elevate Holistics works with board-certified doctors who are registered with the commission and are familiar with medical marijuana. Our sessions are HIPAA compliant and completely secure. Not only will our doctors assess your condition and provide you with the written certification that you need, but they can also answer any questions you may have about using marijuana properly. They can recommend the appropriate products and dosages for your condition and address any concerns that you may have.
Becoming A Caregiver In Maryland
Minors and people who are not physically able to visit dispensaries on their own can still obtain medical marijuana in Maryland with the help of a caregiver. Caregivers must be over the age of 21 and are limited to providing care for up to five people.
The process of getting a Maryland medical marijuana card as a caregiver is similar to registering for a card for yourself. This can be done through the online Caregiver Registry. The patient will then need to have an appointment with a registered medical provider and get written certification. Caregivers need to renew their medical cards every two years. Caregivers can only purchase marijuana for the approved patients and cannot use it themselves.
Medical Marijuana Laws in Maryland
If you’re using medical marijuana in Maryland, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the local laws. Here’s what you need to know as a medical cardholder.
Possession Limits in Maryland
With your medical marijuana card, you can purchase up to 120 grams of dried cannabis or 36 grams of THC cannabis extract every 30 days. If you have a special condition that requires more, your doctor can approve a higher possession limit for you. You are only allowed to consume marijuana within your private residence, and you cannot operate any vehicles under the influence of marijuana.
If you don’t have a medical marijuana card, you are not legally allowed to possess marijuana. However, Maryland has voted to decriminalize the possession of 10 grams of less of marijuana. This means if you are caught carrying less than 10 grams of marijuana, you won’t face any criminal charges, although you will need to pay a fine.
For gun owners in MD, make sure you check out this blog post before you grab your MMJ card.
Growing Medical Marijuana In MD
Growing medical marijuana in Maryland is currently illegal for civilians. This means you cannot cultivate your own marijuana at home, even in small quantities. However, there are not any specific penalties for growing medical marijuana – all of the penalties are based on the possession of marijuana.
Reciprocity Laws in Maryland
Maryland does not currently have any reciprocity laws in place, which means you cannot get medical marijuana if you are not a resident of Maryland. When medical marijuana was first legalized in Maryland, the state did have a reciprocity law, but they rescinded this in 2017. This was likely so the state could focus on meeting the high demand for medical marijuana from current residents.
If you’re interested in getting your medical marijuana card in Maryland, you can use Elevate Holistics to do so. We offer appointments with board-certified medical marijuana doctors that you can complete virtually from the comfort of your own home.
