Weed in Missouri: What’s it Like

Table of Contents

If you are buying weed in Missouri, you would probably want to know how cannabis in Missouri compares with that of other states.

For starters, Missouri is the home to some of the best cannabis farms in the U.S.

On the one hand, this is because of the competitiveness of the state’s cannabis market, which pushes marijuana businesses to make every effort to be better than others and stand out.

On the other hand, it is thanks to the state’s strict cannabis regulations, which enforce high standards across all levels of the supply chain of cannabis in Missouri.

As a result, the quality of weed in Missouri is on the high side — if you are looking for top-shelf cannabis, MO is a good start.

So, let’s look at the state of marijuana in Missouri across two main factors: price and THC percentages. What does the THC percentage mean, and what is the average THC percentage in Missouri?

Buying Weed in Missouri: Pricey than other States?

Compared side by side with Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and a few other states that have had their cannabis industry running since the early 2000s, you may consider weed in Missouri to be pricey.

However, if you repeat the comparison with most other states where medical marijuana is legal, the price of cannabis in Missouri falls within a moderate level.

You can get an eighth of medium-quality weed at $35 to $40, and an eighth of top-shelf marijuana usually goes for $45 to $70, which puts Missouri on par with most surrounding states when it comes to the price of weed.

More so, the price of medical marijuana is likely to become cheaper if some lingering expectations manifest in the following year.

THC Percentages of Cannabis in Missouri

In the patient information handbook on Medical Marijuana in Missouri, the Right to Access Marijuana section states that:

“Medical marijuana in Missouri refers to any strain of cannabis with a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content of greater than 0.3% on a dry weight basis. Products containing forms of cannabis or hemp or chemicals from cannabis or hemp that do not contain this amount of THC are not considered medical marijuana in Missouri.”

Questions like, “what are the implications of the THC percentages?” might be confusing for some patients. Does this mean that strains with THC percentages less than 0.3% are not medical marijuana and, therefore, illegal?

It is important to note the use of the term “hemp.” With the 2018 Farm Bill, the federal government removed hemp from its list of controlled substances.

Hemp, also known as industrial hemp, is basically the same as marijuana but is mostly grown for industrial purposes.

In most cases, manufacturers use hemp for CBD extracts in numerous products you can buy in some states where medical and recreational marijuana is still illegal. Industrial hemp also serves as a source material for textiles and bioplastics.

The major difference between marijuana and hemp lies in the average THC percentage of the cannabis strains.

The average THC percentage for hemp is below 0.3%, while THC percentages that qualify a cannabis strain as marijuana or weed start from 0.3% and can be as high as 28% or more. At 0.3% or less, THC high is nearly nonexistent.

How does this affect you? What does the THC percentage mean for you?

What Does the THC Percentage Mean?

THC percentage means the amount of THC available in a weed strain or weed-infused product relative to the total ingredients in the strain or product.

That is, a 100mg (.1g) cannabis flower with a THC percentage of 15% has 15mg (100mg x 0.15) of THC in it.

In Missouri, there is no concentration limit on THC percentages; limits are by weights, which the state defines as the Missouri Marijuana Equivalency Units (MMEs).

1 MME = 3.5 grams of marijuana = 1 gram of marijuana concentrate = 100 milligrams of THC infused product.

You can learn more about MMEs here.

Since there is no THC concentration limit for weed in Missouri, patients can buy weed with THC percentages above 25%.

Average THC Percentages for cannabis in Missouri

From the state’s definition of medical marijuana in Missouri, we know that a cannabis strain must have at least 0.3% THC before we can classify it as medical marijuana.

But how high can these percentages go?

      • The average THC percentage for cannabis flowers in Missouri ranges from 15% to 22%. There are flowers with higher or lower THC percentages. For newbies, we recommend starting with flowers with 15% THC or less.

      • The average THC percentage for concentrates in Missouri ranges from 63% to 78%. However, some can have THC percentages as high as 85%.

      • The average THC percentage for edibles in Missouri ranges from 20% to 60%. Note that edibles don’t always have THC content in percentages. For instance, you may see a product label with “10 mg THC per serving.”

For concentrates and edibles, we recommend starting very small. Ask your budtender for guidelines on how to use concentrates and edibles so you don’t consume so much that it takes you to God and back.

Also, note that edibles and concentrates could take time to kick in, which may tempt you to take some more when you think they are not working.
