Now that marijuana’s been legalized in the Show Me State, curious cannabis consumers want to know…

Can You Grow Weed in Missouri?

Missouri medical marijuana patients (and patient caregivers) have permission to grow weed since MO medical marijuana laws were passed in 2018.

Just like several other states that have passed recreational marijuana laws, MO residents will now have the freedom to grow their own weed at home. That’s right. Amendment 3 didn’t just legalize the consumption and possession; it legalized cannabis cultivation in Missouri.

Now, we’ll take a deeper look at how many marijuana plants you can grow in Missouri, whether you’re a Missouri medical marijuana patient or a resident aged 21 or over.

How Many Plants Can You Grow In Missouri?

Now that recreational weed is legal, Missouri residents ages 21 and over will be permitted to grow 18 plants in total. That said, they must follow specific rules.

How to Apply to Grow Weed in Missouri

Residents who want to grow weed in the Show Me State legally must first apply for a Missouri cannabis cultivation license. This home cultivation card is issued through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) and costs $100.

Once the application is approved, residents will be allowed to have 6 flowering plants, 6 non-flowering plants (over 14 inches), and 6 clones (under 14 inches). Marijuana can be cultivated indoors or outdoors as long as it’s locked up and can’t be seen by the public.

For example, you can grow weed outdoors in Missouri if cultivated in a private, locked area. Picture a tall privacy fence with a lockable gate where passersby can’t see what’s on the other side.

What is the Marijuana Limit in Missouri?

In Missouri, it’s legal for customers aged 21 and over to buy up to 3 ounces of recreational cannabis.

When Can You Grow Weed In Missouri?

You could technically grow weed indoors all year round in Missouri by consistently rotating your allotted 6 flowering plants and 6 non-flowering plants throughout the year.

But even though weed is technically legal in Missouri, it’s not yet legal to purchase or cultivate for recreational consumers.

When can I grow marijuana in Missouri, then? Well, cannabis cultivation in Missouri won’t begin until sometime after February 2023. While it is legal to grow weed in Missouri, it’s not quite permitted yet for those who aren’t cardholders.

Is it Legal to Grow Weed in Missouri for Medical Patients?

Absolutely. As long as they have a current MMJ card, Missouri medical marijuana patients are legally permitted to grow their own ganja.

How Many Marijuana Plants Can You Grow In Missouri With Your MMJ Card?

Cannabis cultivation laws in Missouri are similar for medical patients and adult residents, save for a few small differences. MMJ cardholders and caregivers are allowed up to 6 flowering plants, 6 non-flowering plants (over 14 inches), and 6 clones (under 14 inches).

Two medical marijuana patients are allowed to share the same grow space. This means that together, they’re legally allowed to cultivate up to 12 flowering plants, 12 non-flowering plants (over 14 inches), and 12 clones (under 14 inches).

If a patient is also a registered caregiver with a patient cultivation ID for another MMJ patient, they can legally cultivate 6 additional flowering plants, 6 additional non-flowering plants, and 6 additional clones. This adds up to a total of 18 plants.

Missouri medical marijuana patients must also submit a cultivation application to the DHSS for a fee of $100.

The same rules apply to both medical and recreational cannabis cultivators in regard to growing weed in an enclosed, locked facility.

Cultivation authorization from the DHSS must be clearly displayed in the enclosed, locked area in close proximity to the cannabis plants.
