ToggleWhen it comes to smoking weed, you have a lot of options to choose from. Smoking joints is arguably one of the most classic ways of enjoying the plant, and it provides super-potent effects that are hard not to love. However, not everybody knows how to roll a joint — easily and efficiently, at least.
And that’s why we’re here.
As much as we love pre-rolls, sometimes, you just don’t have an already rolled joint waiting for you. So, whether you want to know how to roll a joint without a filter or with one, Elevate Holistics has you covered.
How to Roll a Joint With a Filter
Before we get started, it’s important to note that there are many ways to roll a joint. As long as you get rolled up and can smoke it, that’s really all that matters!
However, there are definitely ways to roll a joint that are much easier — and more efficient — than others. So, here’s our four-step process for learning how to roll a joint (with a filter).
Step One: Gather Your Materials
The first step to learning how to roll a joint properly is ensuring you have everything you need.
Here are the basic materials you should have for your joint:
- Cannabis
- Rolling papers
- Filter/roach material (optional but recommended)
- Grinder
- A pen or something similar to pack the joint
If you want to keep your process contained and as neat as possible, a rolling tray is another great thing to have. After all, rolling joints on them is what they’re made for!
Step Two: Make Your Filter
Of course, making a filter is an optional step.
However, we highly recommend doing so, as it gives you something to hold onto, prevents you from burning your fingers as you smoke, and stops any small bits of cannabis from entering your mouth.
You can buy ready-made filters, or you can make your own by folding a small piece of card or stiff paper into an accordion shape on one end, then rolling the rest around it to form a cylinder.
Step Three: Fill and Roll
Next, you need to prepare your bud to fill it in the rolling papers.
Using your grinder, grind your cannabis until it’s broken down into small pieces. The consistency should be even but not overly powdery. If you don’t have a grinder, you can break it up by hand, but it’s more difficult to get an even consistency.
Then, take one of your rolling papers and hold it in a U or boat shape.
Fill it with the ground cannabis, distributing it evenly along the length of the paper. Leave a bit of space at one end for the filter, placing it there once you finish with the flower.
Now comes the tricky part: rolling.
Pinch the paper between your fingertips and roll it back and forth to pack the cannabis down into a shape that’s uniform and tight. (This may take a few tries to get right.)
Once it’s packed and shaped, tuck the unglued side of the paper into the roll, roll it up until just the adhesive end is sticking up, then lick the adhesive and stick it down.
Step Four: Twist it and Light it!
If needed, you can use a pen or something similar to pack the end of the joint down for a more even burn. Once you’ve done this, simply twist the end of the joint to keep everything in.
Then, grab your lighter and get ready to smoke!
When lighting the joint, don’t just torch the end of it. Instead, lightly roast the twisted end with your lighter while rotating the joint.
Once it’s evenly heated, take a draw from the filter end while still applying heat. This should get it started with an even burn.
And that’s all it takes! You’ve now officially learned how to roll a joint with a filter.
How to Roll a Joint Without a Filter
Don’t worry: if you don’t want to roll a joint with a filter, you don’t have to.
Thankfully, knowing how to roll a joint without a filter is very similar to the process we described above — there are just a few minor differences.
Of course, you don’t have to go through the process of making a filter. This also means that when you’re packing the joint with flower, you don’t have to leave room at the end to place the filter in. Instead, you’ll just evenly distribute the bud across the paper.
Then, you just roll and pack as normal.
When you’re lighting the joint, you’ll have to be careful not to inhale too hard, as this will cause you to also inhale cannabis flower, which is never pleasant.
You will also have to be a bit more careful about burning your fingers as the joint reaches the end.
Regardless, it’s best to know to roll a joint with or without a filter, as you simply never know what preference someone has, or what materials are going to be available.
Want to Make Rolling Easier? Buy Cones!
If you’re reading about how to roll a joint and are thinking that it might sound like a bit too much work, we don’t blame you. That’s exactly why pre-rolled cones exist.
At your local smoke shop or wherever you buy rolling papers, you should also be able to find pre-rolled cones. These are rolling papers that come already rolled and with a filter inside; all you have to do is fill it up with flower.
Cones are a great choice for anyone who is in a hurry, doesn’t have the space, or maybe hasn’t mastered the art of knowing how to roll a joint just yet.
No matter what, there’s an option out there for every prospective joint smoker, that’s for sure.
