Booked an appointment at 2pm Thursday afternoon and Elevate Holistics sent me a text at 9pm Saturday night letting me know my application is ready for payment and to be sent to the state, wow. Overall a wonderful experience! Coming from a recreationally legal state to a medically legal state I honestly expected the worst (proof of prescription medications, years of health history, etc); Elevate Holistics made everything an incredibly smooth process with none of the above mentioned we're needed - just honest, chronic issues that benefit from cannabis products!

Medical marijuana laws in Maine are different from many other states, as getting a Maine medical marijuana card doesn’t require that you meet any specific condition. It will be up to the doctors to determine whether they believe it is a good idea for your ailments. The use of medical marijuana in the state has helped many struggling with various health conditions and chronic illnesses. Below, you will find more information on how to get a medical marijuana card in Maine.

How to Get a Medical Card in Maine

To get a medical marijuana card, you will need to talk with Maine marijuana doctors who can prescribe it for you. Of course, you have to keep in mind that not all doctors in the state will be certified and qualified to provide you with medical marijuana. It’s important to find a doctor that has experience in this field.

At Elevate Holistics, we make it easy for you to get an online medical card in Maine. We can provide you with secure online appointments, where you can speak with a doctor in the state that can help provide you with a fast medical card online in Maine. Our appointments make it much easier for you to get a Maine medical card online.

The services are simple, affordable, and HIPAA-compliant. You will also appreciate the knowledge of the doctors we work with. They are knowledgeable about cannabis and can provide you with some recommendations on what you might want to choose. They can also answer any questions that you might have. This can be particularly important for those who have not used marijuana in any capacity before.

After you have certification from the doctor, it becomes possible to make purchases from the dispensaries in Maine. The process doesn’t take long to complete, and you should have your card in a matter of weeks or less in most cases.

Is Medical Marijuana Legal in Maine?

In Maine, medical marijuana has been legal for many years. It was one of the earliest states to allow for the use of marijuana for medical purposes, having passed with 62% of the vote in November of 1999. The state was ahead of the curve when it came to the use of marijuana for medical purposes.

You will also find that the laws regarding medical marijuana use in the state are a bit more lenient than they are in some other states. The qualifying conditions are a good example of this.

Although medical marijuana is legal, there are still possession limits. The possession limit for marijuana (flower) is 71 grams and 5 grams for concentrate—this is the same as Maine recreational marijuana.

Is Recreational Marijuana Legal in Maine?

Recreational marijuana in Maine is now legal, as well. It took the state a bit longer to get to this point, but voters approved the change in November 2016. In Maine, weed is now legal for recreational use, which means it can be sold and taxed, providing the state with added revenue. Recreational use is also referred to as adult-use marijuana in Maine.

The possession limits for recreational marijuana are the same as for medical marijuana, which may make you wonder whether you would even need a medical marijuana card. Even though the limits are the same for medical users, you will find that having a medical card is going to provide you with some other benefits.

Namely, the costs are often lower, you will have greater legal protection, lower taxes, and access to more products and dispensaries. The taxes are 5.5% for medical marijuana and 8% for edibles used as medical marijuana. With recreational marijuana, though, the tax is 15.5%.

How to Get Medical Marijuana in Maine

If you want to get medical marijuana in Maine, you first need to get a medical marijuana card, as described above. Once you have your med card, you can then buy from any of the Maine medical dispensaries, or you can grow your own if you prefer that option.

You can talk with the employees at the dispensary regarding the various products they offer, and they may be able to provide you with some guidance and insight into which options to choose.

You will find that Maine has reciprocity laws with many other states where medical marijuana is legal. You can check to determine whether your state is reciprocal if you aren’t from Maine but will be traveling there or moving there. If you are moving out of Maine, you can also check to see if other states have reciprocal laws.

Qualifying Conditions for Medical Card in Maine

One of the most interesting things regarding medical marijuana and getting a Maine medical card is the list of qualifying conditions. There are no specific Maine medical marijuana conditions.

Today, the list has been removed from the program and the determination of whether someone should receive a medical card in Maine is left up to the medical professional. If they feel that medical marijuana is going to benefit the patient, they can then certify the patient for it. Keep in mind that the provider does need to be registered with the Division of Licensing & Regulatory Services through the Department of Health & Human Services.

Even though it may appear to be easier to get the medical marijuana card in Maine, there are still rules that need to be followed even if there aren’t criteria that need to be met. In cases of someone dealing with chronic pain, for example, it needs to be proved that other treatments have not been successful over the course of the last six months.

Where to Buy Marijuana in Maine

Marijuana can be bought in multiple locations throughout the state of Maine depending on whether you are buying recreationally or you are buying medical marijuana.

Maine Dispensaries

There are five medical marijuana dispensaries in the state. Through these locations, patients can obtain their medical cannabis. At these locations, you will find a wide range of different types of products. You can find flower, which you can buy and then roll on your own, vaporizers, pre-rolls, concentrates, edibles, concentrates, tinctures, and topicals. You can find a range of CBD products, as well.

Growing Marijuana in Maine

If you don’t want to buy marijuana, you do have the option of growing your own. In Maine, you are allowed to cultivate up to three mature cannabis plants, 12 immature plants, and as many seedlings as you may wish. If you want to grow more than this, you will need to have a commercial license.

Should you opt to grow your own marijuana whether it is for medical or recreational use? It will depend on a range of factors such as how much knowledge you have regarding growing, where you live, the amount of space you have, and more.

Growing is certainly possible, but for most people, buying medical marijuana from a dispensary tends to be the easiest option.

Medical Marijuana Caregiver License in Maine

In some cases, patients might be eligible to receive a medical marijuana card, but they may not be able to apply for it themselves. They might be too young, or they could have a condition that prevents it. In those cases, a caregiver can be allowed to handle the process of applying for the card and getting MMJ for the patient. They will need to have a medical marijuana caregiver license in Maine.

The process of how to become a caregiver in Maine is relatively simple. For this to occur, the caregiver will need to be at least 21 years old, and they cannot have any convictions related to drugs, narcotics, and other scheduled substances. The current cost for registering for caregivers is $200 per patient, and $31 for a criminal background check.

Additionally, those who want to be medical marijuana caregivers in Maine will need to fill out a caregiver designation form, which will require information on the caregiver, the patient, and whether the caregiver is going to be cultivating the marijuana on their own.

If you are going to cultivate the marijuana yourself rather than going to a Maine medical dispensary, you will need to register the cultivation location, the dispensing location, and other caregiver information.
