The use of cannabis in therapeutic and skincare routines dates as far back as 2000 BC, with documented evidence of use noted across Asia and the Middle East.

From infused tea to hash and cannabis oil, the humans of old had used and consumed CBD in different forms to relieve ailments and improve their skin.

While the details are not so clear, the ancient Egyptians and Indians graciously recorded their use of cannabis products for therapy and skincare, so we’d never miss out on the wonders the liberating plant has to offer.

Today, you can learn how to make CBD lotion, creams, and balms, among other similar products, after a few clicks on your device.

Following the footsteps of early humans, we’ll provide you with very clear steps to take when making CBD lotion and answer some of your questions while at it: what is CBD body lotion? How does CBD lotion work?

What is CBD Lotion?

Before you dive in to learn how to make CBD lotion, it’s essential to understand what CBD lotion is.

CBD body lotion is simply a lotion-based topical that is CBD-infused. The same definition applies to other topicals, including balms, creams, and salves in their respective forms.

Why CBD lotions? Why would anybody want to add CBD to topicals? Well, research has shown that CBD has anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidant properties.

Since applying lotion on a target area helps concentrate the effects of the constituent ingredients in the said spot, manufacturers created CBD-infused lotions to help patients directly relieve their pain or manage other conditions that may be affecting them.

The typical commercial production of CBD lotion involves adding CBD to an oil base, usually hemp seed oil or coconut oil, then using the mixture as an ingredient when making CBD lotions.

Affordable weed? It's all in the card.

Having an MMJ card means paying less for your top-shelf bud -- and getting more of it.

How Does CBD Lotion Work?

“Permeation” is the keyword to hum when pondering the question, “How does CBD lotion work?”.

In simple terms, when you apply CBD lotion on a target area, CBD and other active substances in the lotion permeate your skin and the layers underneath to act directly on whatever is bothering you.

Put technically, the CBD body lotion permeates your skin and bypasses the cannabinoid receptors – the primary targets of THC – to link directly with anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG), which are functional in regulating cell growth and differentiation and brain-reward circuitry.

Consequently, the lotion delivers CBD and its accompanying benefits to manage or amend damages caused by disorders in the body while making you feel calm or relaxed.

Does CBD Lotion Show on a Drug Test?

Answering the “How does CBD lotion work?” question brought us face to face with anandamide, an endocannabinoid found in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid.

Another thing to note is that the CBD industry is not the most regulated out there, and THC is not the easiest substance to expunge from weed and weed derivatives.

Therefore, even CBD products that claim not to have THC could have trace amounts of THC, which gradually build up in your body.

With the above information, you can tell that CBD body lotion can show up on a drug test. So, back to the question: does CBD lotion show on a drug test? The simple answer is, yes, CBD can show up on a drug test.

The CBD itself is not the problem; it’s the trace amounts of THC in your CBD body lotion that you have to worry about.

However, that’s no cause for panic. Check out our previous article on how to pass a drug test with CBD.

How to Make CBD Lotion at Home!

CBD products are the most ubiquitous of all hemp and marijuana-derived products you will find in many households. And CBD topicals are among the top sellers.

With everything ubiquitous, it is only a matter of time before a budding or experienced DIYer decides to make theirs at home.

Well, here you are now, wanting to learn how to make CBD lotion at home, and we’re happy to oblige you!

Making CBD lotion at Home: CBD Lotion Recipe

There are various recipes for making CBD body lotion; it is only right that we share our favorite, which is interestingly one of the easiest.

The ingredients:

      • 4 tablespoons of softened, unrefined shea butter. You can use refined shea butter or cocoa butter, depending on what’s available.
      • 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel
      • 2 tablespoons of beeswax
      • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil (or other carrier oils such as canola oil, sunflower oil, jojoba oil)
      • 2 teaspoons of conc. CBD oil (or as desired)
      • Fragrant essential oil, preferably lavender

    The cookware/materials:

        • A glass container
        • Double boiler (in place of a double boiler, you can use a heat-proof bowl placed atop a small pot)
        • Mixing bowls
        • Glass jars
        • Measuring spoons
        • Blender, whisker, or hand mixer

      The Process:

          1. Have all the ingredients ready: measure them out before you start

          1. Fill the bottom of your double boiler with up to two inches of water, and bring it to low heat.

          1. Add the shea butter (or cocoa butter), coconut oil, and beeswax to the top section of the double boiler and allow it to melt.

          1. Continuously stir to ensure an even mixture as the substances melt.

          1. Once well-melted and mixed, turn off the heat and pour the mixture into a blender or mixing bowl.

          1. Allow it to cool for about 60 minutes.

          1. Then add your aloe vera, essential oil, and CBD oil. You can also add vitamin E if you want to preserve it for a longer time.

          1. Then blend, whisk, or mix until you get a creamy consistency.

Voila! Your CBD body lotion is now ready. Store it in an air-tight corner and keep it in your fridge to make it last longer.

The Benefits of Making CBD Lotion

The benefits of making CBD lotion are as many as the therapeutic benefits that CBD has to offer.

Plus, there’s also the confidence that comes in knowing that, unlike store-bought lotions, you know what’s in your lotion, and you can tweak your CBD body lotion to suit you as you deem fit.

The benefits of making CBD lotion include the following:

            • Better relaxation and quality sleep: recall that CBD interacts with anandamide, which is partly responsible for the functioning of the brain-reward circuitry. Hence, you could feel more fulfilled, calmer, and more likely to sleep better.
            • The lotion cleanses, moisturizes, and nourishes your skin through its pack of highly effective, natural skincare ingredients (including beeswax, aloe vera, and shea butter).
            • The lotion permeates through your skin to deliver CBD’s anti-inflammatory, analgesic, wound-healing, anti-itching, and anti-proliferative properties to the target areas.
            • Research has shown that some of the skincare benefits of CBD include the relief of acne, eczema, and psoriasis.

Another reason you should know how to make CBD lotion is that the DIY process could be handy if you have sensitive skin and need a potent lotion with non-toxic ingredients.

You can opt to decarboxylate the cannabis and extract CBD oil yourself or skip the essential oils, which might irritate your sensitive skin.

Experience CBD in a Whole New Way With CBD Lotion

You can find CBD products on the shelves of most grocery stores. Most of these products are produced outside the jurisdiction of relevant regulatory agencies due to poor oversight in the industry.

Still, there are still manufacturers going over and beyond to ensure that their products are as pure as possible. They run multiple lab tests to certify the potency and authenticity of their CBD lotions.

However, such CBD lotions are often found on the top shelves of licensed dispensaries – almost never in grocery stores.

That said, you need a medical marijuana card to access most medical-grade CBD lotions.
