If someone were to ask you to name an indica strain of weed, you’re either going to say one of two strains: Northern Lights or Granddaddy Purple. And, today, we’re focusing on the Northern Lights strain

As arguably one of the most famous pure indicas on the market, it’s time to know more about this famous strain.

So, let’s get into it: where does the Northern Lights strain come from and what do its effects look like?

The History of the Northern Lights Strain

Usually, a strain’s history tends to be shrouded in mystery. In fact, it’s not uncommon for us to know nothing about where a strain came from or who curated it. But, that’s not the case with the Northern Lights strain.

Cultivators originally grew Northern Lights in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, but it was not until the strain made its way to the Netherlands that it gained its legendary status.

The exact lineage of Northern Lights is somewhat unclear, but it is generally believed to be a pure or nearly pure Indica strain derived from Afghani genetics.

Some accounts suggest that the original Northern Lights plants were a mix of eleven different seeds, each representing a different cannabis variety.

The strain truly began to gain prominence when it reached the Netherlands in the mid-1980s

Neville Schoenmaker, the founder of the first Dutch seed bank, The Seed Bank of Holland, acquired some of the original Northern Lights seeds.

Through selective breeding and careful cultivation, Neville and other Dutch growers developed several phenotypes of Northern Lights, stabilizing the genetics and enhancing its desirable traits.

From there, the strain exploded — and its popularity hasn’t slowed down since.

What Kind of Weed is Northern Lights?

As we briefly gave away the beginning, Northern Lights is, in fact, an indica strain

This strain appears to come from Afghani and Thai strains: Afghani an indica, and Thai a sativa. Together, they curated a deeply pure indica strain.

The Nothern Lights strain exhibits all of the classic effects of an indica through and through, making it a great option for anyone seeking that kind of head-to-toe relaxation.

Northern Lights Strain Effects

Like all cannabis strains, Northern Lights is going to promote slightly different effects in each person.

But, in general, here is what most people tend to report feeling after taking a few puffs of this soothing strain:

  • Deep Relaxation: Users often report a profound sense of relaxation that spreads throughout the body, making this strain a popular choice for unwinding after a stressful day or for use in the evening.
  • Pain Relief: Consumers commonly turn to Northern Lights for its analgesic properties, helping to alleviate chronic pain, muscle tension, and discomfort from various medical conditions.
  • Euphoria: The Northern Lights strain can induce feelings of happiness and well-being, lifting the spirits of users and creating a sense of contentment.
  • Sleep Aid: Due to its strong Indica effects, people frequently consume it to combat insomnia, as it can make users feel sleepy and aid in falling asleep more easily.
  • Appetite Stimulation: Like many cannabis strains, Northern Lights may increase appetite, which can be beneficial for those suffering from loss of appetite due to medical treatments or other conditions.
  • Stress and Anxiety Reduction: Users often find this strain helpful in reducing stress and anxiety levels, thanks to its calming effects on the mind.

How Does Northern Lights Smell and Taste?

The flavor and scent profile of Northern Lights is a complex, enjoyable one.

Many people find that the strain promotes earthy, pine-based notes that remind them of the terroir of the mountains. There is also a sweet undertone to the scent, which can vary in intensity but often adds a pleasant complexity to the earthiness.

The taste of the Northern Lights strain tends to mirror its aroma, offering a sweet and slightly herbal flavor that is both smooth and appealing on the palate.

Some consumers report a hint of spiciness or a peppery flavor that adds an extra layer of depth to the taste.

Finally, the earthy notes present in the smell also come through in the taste, with a woody or piney undertone that makes the smoking or vaping experience quite memorable.
