Detroit medical marijuana has been legal in the state since 2008. Residents voted to approve the Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care Initiative, legalizing MMJ for severely ill patients. Since then, Michigan has opened hundreds of medical marijuana dispensaries for patients to shop and get the products they need. Over the years, Detroit has seen the opening of over 40 cannabis dispensaries alone. 

Those with a medical marijuana card in Detroit can legally possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis per day, but no more than ten ounces a month . Patients are also allowed to cultivate, possess, and harvest from up to 12 cannabis plants at a time in their homes. But, keep in mind that if you intend to grow your own Detroit marijuana, you have to state your intention on your registry application. 

Is Recreational Marijuana Legal in Detroit? 

Along with medical cannabis, recreational marijuana is also legal in Detroit. This means that adults 21 years and older can legally walk into a recreational dispensary and purchase cannabis products. To do so, you have to present your ID upon entering or purchasing (or both). This way, the state can keep track of how much cannabis you’re buying — and ensure you’re of the legal age. 

Just like medical patients, adult-use consumers also have possession limits. Recreational consumers can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis at one time, and no more than 15 of those grams can be in the form of a concentrate. 

In Detroit — and throughout Michigan — you’ll notice that recreational and medical consumers have separate dispensaries. That’s right: recreational consumers cannot shop at medical dispensaries in Detroit, MI. You must have an MMMP (Michigan Medical Marijuana Program) card to do so. 

How to Get a Medical Card in Detroit 

So, you’re interested in getting your MMMP card, but… how do you get a Detroit medical marijuana card in the first place? 

Michigan weed laws state that you have to meet with a qualified physician to discuss whether or not your medical conditions meet the MMMP’s needs. Sometimes, finding a medical marijuana doctor can be difficult — and pricey. Thankfully, Elevate Holistics can help.

• Cancer
• Crohn’s disease
• Glaucoma
• Hepatitis C
• HIV/AIDS
• Nail-patella syndrome 
• Chronic or debilitating conditions that produce one or more of the following:
  • Cachexia
  • Severe and chronic pain
  • Severe nausea
  • Seizures
  • Severe and persistent muscle spasms, including but not limited to those with the characteristics of multiple sclerosis

Is it Legal to Grow Marijuana in Detroit?

Yes, Michigan weed laws outline that any adult interested in growing cannabis at home can do so. Adults, patients, and caregivers can legally cultivate up to 12 cannabis plants at one time. From these plants, cultivators cannot possess more than 10 ounces of flower at home. 

If you’re a medical patient who wants to grow cannabis, you’re more than welcome to. However, you need to state on your registration application your intent to do so. The application will ask you, so be honest!
