A Step-By-Step Guide to Getting Your Medical Card in Washington DC

Getting medical marijuana in DC is, well, confusing. Compared to other states, DC does things differently in terms of its medical cannabis program, so we’re here to break it down. Follow these four easy steps to getting your DC medical marijuana card and you should be just fine:

  1. Meet with an approved physician for an evaluation
  2. Receive a physician’s recommendation
  3. Apply online or in-person and pay the fees
  4. Submit your application and wait for your card!

It’s important to note that, in DC, medical patients are the only ones who have access to licensed dispensaries. So, while recreational cannabis is technically legal, it is only the medical patients who get the full cannabis-buying experience.

Who Can Get a Medical Card in DC?

To qualify for a medical card in the District of Columbia, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old or older
  • Be a DC resident
  • Have at least one debilitating medical condition

If you’re not yet 18, don’t worry: you can still get your MMJ card. For minors, your parent or guardian must fill out the application on your behalf.

What Are the Qualifying Conditions for Medical Cannabis in DC?

DC used to have a list of qualifying conditions for their medical cannabis program, but this has since been changed. Now, it is up to your physician to decide if you have a debilitating medical condition that may be helped through cannabis.

How-To Steps for Getting an MMJ Card in the District of Columbia

1: Meet With An Approved Physician for an Evaluation

Like many places across the US, to get your DC medical card, you have to start by meeting with a qualified physician. This physician will then evaluate you to see if you have a medical condition that could be helped or alleviated through medical cannabis.

2: Receive Your Physician’s Recommendation

If your physician decides that medical cannabis is a good choice for you, they will then write you a physician’s recommendation confirming that an MMJ card would be beneficial. Make sure you hold onto this, as you cannot apply for your card without one.

3: Apply Online or In-Person and Pay the Fees

Now that you have your recommendation, it’s time to actually apply for your card. You can print out the application or fill it out electronically depending on what you prefer. This process will require two different forms of ID proving your DC residency, as well as a one-time $100 application fee. During this time, you will also be asked to select a “designated dispensary.” This will be the shop you choose to consistently purchase your cannabis from.

4: Submit Your Application and Wait for Your Card!

After you’ve collected your recommendation, proof of residency, and paid your fees, all that’s left to do is wait. Your application will be submitted as soon as you pay, and you can expect to get your card in the mail about 3-4 weeks later. Then, it’s time to finally enjoy your supportive medicinal cannabis at your designated dispensary.
