Medical Cannabis Certification for Maryland

How To Get A Medical Marijuana Card In Maryland

Marijuana has many unique medical benefits, and has been proven to be very effective for managing chronic pain. The state of Maryland legalized medical marijuana use in 2014, but you’ll need a medical marijuana card in order to purchase it. Here’s how to get a medical marijuana card in Maryland and what you need to know as you start the process.

Getting A Medical Marijuana Card In Maryland

The process of getting a medical marijuana card in Maryland can seem daunting at first. Here’s what you’ll need to start your Maryland medical marijuana application.

Steps For Getting A Maryland Medical Marijuana Card

The first step to getting your Maryland medical marijuana card is registering as a patient with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. You can do this through their registry portal. To create an account, you will need a valid email address. Once you have an account set up, you can complete your registration online.

In order to complete your registration, you’ll need to provide proof of Maryland residency, a government-approved photo ID, and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. You’ll also need a passport-quality photograph, which will go on your medical marijuana card when it is eventually sent to you.

After you have submitted an online application, you will get a verification email. You will need to click the link in this email in order to submit your application. If you don’t click this link, your application will not be processed.

The next step is to obtain a medical certification from a doctor who is registered with the commission. This certification verifies that you have a qualifying condition for medical marijuana in Maryland. You can find doctors who prescribe medical marijuana in Maryland through the provider registry. Elevate Holistics also works with medical marijuana doctors in Maryland to offer secure online appointments where you can obtain your certification.

Once you submit your written certification to the commission, they will review it. Once you are approved, they will send you an email with a link to your temporary medical marijuana card, which you can print out. Your permanent card will be mailed to you a few weeks later.

What Documents Are Needed?

When you apply to get a medical marijuana card, you’ll need to submit certain documents electronically in order to qualify. First, you’ll need to have a valid email address and submit the last four digits of your Social Security number. You’ll also need to submit a digital copy of a valid photo ID. This can be a driver’s license, a state ID card, a US passport, or a military ID.

If your ID does not prove your Maryland residency, you will need to submit two additional documents to prove that you live in Maryland. You can choose from a long list of documents available on the commission’s website, which includes things like bank statements, utility bills, rental contracts, proof of home ownership, and more.

Finally, you will need to submit a high quality photo that clearly shows your face on a white background. One of the best ways to get this photo is to use an app or service that takes passport photos. Once your initial application has been received, you’ll also need a written certification from a licensed medical provider confirming that you have one of the approved Maryland medical marijuana conditions.

Qualifying Medical Conditions

In order to get a medical marijuana card in Maryland, you need to have one of the state’s qualifying conditions. There are many physical and mental health conditions that fall within the state’s guidelines for medical marijuana use. These include any form of chronic pain, anorexia, post-traumatic stress disorder, seizures, and severe nausea. The Maryland medical marijuana qualifying conditions are quite broad, so it’s worth talking to a doctor if you think you could benefit from using medical marijuana.

How Much Is A Medical Card in MD?

To create an account with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, you will need to pay an initial fee of $50. This fee is non-refundable. Maryland is unique in that you only need to renew your medical marijuana registration every three years, instead of having to renew it every year. The renewal fee is also $50.

You’ll also need to pay for your consultation with a medical marijuana doctor. It’s important to note that these sessions are not always covered by insurance. The cost will vary depending on what type of doctor you decide to see. Elevate Holistics offers affordable online appointments that start at $75 per session.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Medical Card In Maryland?

The process to get a medical marijuana card in Maryland can unfortunately be quite lengthy. After you submit your initial application, you’ll need to wait for a follow-up email from the commission. This can take anywhere from five days to 45 days. Once you’ve gotten this follow-up email, you’ll be able to move forward and get your certification from a physician. Once this certification has been submitted, you’ll get your temporary card and you will be able to visit a dispensary. Overall, you should expect the process of getting a medical card in Maryland to take about two months.

Where Can I Get Medical Marijuana in Maryland?

Once you have your medical card, you will be able to visit a licensed dispensary and purchase marijuana products. There are licensed dispensaries throughout the state of Maryland, so there’s a good chance you will have one within a short drive of your home. Elevate Holistics partners with dispensaries around the country.

Medical Marijuana Doctors in Maryland

To get your written medical marijuana certification, you’ll need to visit a doctor who is registered with the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission. Not all doctors in Maryland are currently registered with the commission, although the state is currently pushing for more medical providers to join the program.

Elevate Holistics works with board-certified doctors who are registered with the commission and are familiar with medical marijuana. Our sessions are HIPAA compliant and completely secure. Not only will our doctors assess your condition and provide you with the written certification that you need, but they can also answer any questions you may have about using marijuana properly. They can recommend the appropriate products and dosages for your condition and address any concerns that you may have.

Becoming A Caregiver In MD

Minors and people who are not physically able to visit dispensaries on their own can still obtain medical marijuana in Maryland with the help of a caregiver. Caregivers must be over the age of 21 and are limited to providing care for up to five people. The process of getting a medical marijuana card as a caregiver is similar to registering for a card for yourself. This can be done through the online Caregiver Registry. The patient will then need to have an appointment with a registered medical provider and get written certification. Caregivers need to renew their medical cards every two years. Caregivers can only purchase marijuana for the approved patients and cannot use it themselves.

Medical Marijuana Laws in Maryland

If you’re using medical marijuana in Maryland, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the local laws. Here’s what you need to know as a medical cardholder.

Possession Limits In MD

With your medical marijuana card, you can purchase up to 120 grams of dried cannabis or 36 grams of THC cannabis extract every 30 days. If you have a special condition that requires more, your doctor can approve a higher possession limit for you. You are only allowed to consume marijuana within your private residence, and you cannot operate any vehicles under the influence of marijuana.

If you don’t have a medical marijuana card, you are not legally allowed to possess marijuana. However, Maryland has voted to decriminalize the possession of 10 grams of less of marijuana. This means if you are caught carrying less than 10 grams of marijuana, you won’t face any criminal charges, although you will need to pay a fine.

Growing Medical Marijuana In MD

Growing medical marijuana in Maryland is currently illegal for civilians. This means you cannot cultivate your own marijuana at home, even in small quantities. However, there are not any specific penalties for growing medical marijuana – all of the penalties are based on the possession of marijuana.

Reciprocity Laws In MD

Maryland does not currently have any reciprocity laws in place, which means you cannot get medical marijuana if you are not a resident of Maryland. When medical marijuana was first legalized in Maryland, the state did have a reciprocity law, but they rescinded this in 2017. This was likely so the state could focus on meeting the high demand for medical marijuana from current residents.

Pick an appointment and take the first step.

  • Are Maryland medical cannabis patients and caregivers protected against federal prosecution?

Possession and use of medical cannabis is still a violation of the federal Controlled Substances Act. Your MD MMJ card does not shield you from federal law. However, federal budget legislation since 2014 has consistently blocked the U.S. Department of Justice from interfering with state MMJ programs. It’s even held up in court — for individuals who comply with their state’s laws.

  • Are patients required to pay for a Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) card?

Yes. As of January 1, 2019, all new patients must purchase an MMCC card for $50. They expire in 3 years.

  • Can a medical cannabis patient legally own or possess a firearm?

No. Federal law bars medical cannabis patients from purchasing or possessing firearms. Your patient information with the MMCC is considered confidential and protected. However, the Maryland State Police follow guidelines to ask people trying to purchase firearms if they are an MMJ patient and will bar you from making the transaction if you admit that you are. Providing false information when purchasing a firearm is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of as much as $250,000.

  • How do I get a certification?

A patient needs a visit with a registered provider with whom the patient has a “bona fide provider-patient relationship”. If the patient meets the provider’s criteria, the provider will issue a certification.

Remember, before you see a provider, you must first be registered with MMCC and have received an approval email with your patient ID number, which you will need to take to the provider. It can take 30 days or more to get your approval email after applying.

The provider must be registered before the certification visit. Because of COVID-19, patients may now get certification through telehealth—a video consultation with a registered provider through an online clinic such as Elevate Holistics.

  • What is a “bona fide provider-patient relationship”?

According to Maryland law, it is a treatment or counseling relationship between a provider and a patient in which the provider reviews and assesses the necessary past and present condition of the patient and considers their future treatment program.

  • What do I do after the certification?

You may go to any licensed dispensary to buy medical cannabis.
Using your patient ID number, the provider will enter you into the MMCC database. After you receive your written certification, but before you visit a dispensary, you must print a temporary MMCC ID. Show this to the dispensary. They will check it against the Commission before you can make a transaction.
